KIEV, Ukraine (AP) Fearing that a call for a truce was a ruse, protesters tossed firebombs and advanced upon police lines Thursday in Ukraine's embattled capital. Government snipers shot back and the almost-medieval melee that ensued left at least 70 people dead and hundreds injured. Video footage on Ukrainian television showed shocking scenes Thursday of protesters being cut down by gunfire, lying on the pavement as comrades rushed to their aid. Trying to protect themselves with shields, teams of protesters carried bodies away on sheets of plastic or on planks of wood.
Protesters were also seen leading policemen with their hands held high around the sprawling protest camp in central Kiev. Ukraine's Interior ministry says 67 police were captured in all. It was not clear how they were taken. An opposition lawmaker said they were being held in Kiev's occupied city hall.
President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition protesters who demand his resignation are locked in an epic battle over the identity of Ukraine, a nation of 46 million that has divided loyalties between Russia and the West. Parts of the country mostly in its western cities are in open revolt against Yanukovych's central government, while many in eastern Ukraine favor strong ties with Russia, their former Soviet ruler.
At least 99 people have died this week in the clashes in Kiev, a sharp reversal in three months of mostly peaceful protests. Now neither side appears willing to compromise, with the opposition insisting on Yanukovych's resignation and an early election and the president apparently prepared to fight until the end.

Well, there’s a little more to it than that . . .
They’ve been in the streets for months, peacefully.
Government goons have tried to disperse the protestors repeatedly, sometimes violently.
It’s a determined bunch. Do you know how cold it is there? They’ve been living outside in frigid conditions since November.
Those who aren’t in the streets are providing food and support. Not just once or twice, but continually.
When the government outlawed hard hats, Ukrainians donated colanders to the protestors. Yep, kitchen colanders.
Every hour they sing the Ukrainian national anthem. Every hour. “And we too shall rule, brothers, in a free land of our own. . . Well lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom . . .”
Here’s a Youtube of the hourly anthem, from Tuesday. It gives me chills.

So you will side with the atheists and former communists should the political winds shift in an ugly direction?
No thanks. 400 years of being brutalized by Russia is enough.
A real life “Do you hear the people sing?” moment.
I’ve always thought we should create an AK-47 factory in about Alabama. Stock AKs and ammo by the millions. Ship them to freedom lovers when they get into a scrape.
Just a thought.
Everyone pictured at the following link is being paid by Soros.

Or... You know... The other thing...
I've always thought that one of the most effective counter-totalitarian tactics would be to quietly kill the bureaucrats as they arrive home from work. Don't make any noise about it. Just do it.
Eventually, nobody will go to work for such a government.
What say you?
They are all George Soros in disguise?
The Lithuanians did it with candles, while singing songs. And the casualty-count was far lower than here.
They'd have a reunion?
The resemblance in those masks is uncanny...
So the two questions remaining, are: are you unfamiliar with George Soros, or neo-Nazis?
Had to look that one up, this is what I found.
Agents Provocateurs...
Around 10PM over there. Espresso feed is still showing folks arguing in Parliament.
I have to wonder what would happen if a few thousand armed 'protesters" stormed the White House. I assume the Capitol Police might start shooting to protect the WH. Would the UN and the world then demand that Obama stop shooting his own people and step down?
Best laugh of the day. Well done!
You think that is funny?
Actually I'm serious. In places like Egypt, Libya, Syria, etc. whenever the government uses force against protesters (who are blowing things up, shooting at people, etc.) we seem to side with the protesters and not the governments.
Certainly if protesters here got out of hand force would be needed to repel them, and then we would be in exactly the same position... the "government shooting it's own citizens".
The humor is the theoretical premise that the statist United Nations would do anything to impede the forces of the Baraq Obama regime.
The protesters tantrum trying to join the socialist EU has nothing in common with the American Revolution. Quite the opposite.
