At least eighteen people including seven policemen and 11 protesters were killed and hundreds more were injured during clashes in Kiev on Tuesday.
Many were killed by gunshot and hundreds more were injured, with dozens of them in a serious condition, police and opposition representatives said.
Despite Western demands for restraint and dialogue, the state security service first set a deadline for the demonstrators to end disorder or face "tough measures", and then the police advanced into Independence Square, the center of the protest campaign.

They’ve got a lot of funding from the US government.
I suspect they are hoping to avoid even more serious violence. Already a number of police officers have been killed as well as protesters. I doubt the rest of them want to be in a no holds barred firefight with thousands of their fellow countrymen. Particularly those that were or are presently in the army.
The strife in the Ukraine is more like the precursor to a civil war than the typical kind of protest against a government. Hopefully the situation can be resolved quickly without more violence.

I don't think you understand what is going on over there. Their government is corrupt and wants to turn Ukraine back over to the Russians. They are rebelling against fraudulently elected president who has rewritten the constitution illegally to basically give himself dictatorial powers.The corrupt president has just accepted another several billion dollar loan from Russia. They are fighting for the last scraps of freedom that are about to be taken away from them.
