Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain suggested Saturday that efforts to end Syrias roughly 3-year-long civil war are on the brink of failure and the crisis is worsening, following a second round of stalled talks.
The second round of Syria peace talks ended today with no progress toward a negotiated political settlement to the conflict and UN Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi recognizing that failure is looming, McCain said this weekend. After three weeks of talks, we are moving further and further away from a peaceful political solution.
McCain argues the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad has in fact accelerated its attacks on residents, with more of them killed in the three weeks since peace talks began than at any other time during the conflict.
He said fighters have continued with their bombing campaign, are detaining hundreds of men evacuated from the city of Homs in violation of a humanitarian agreement, and will not allow the international community to provide aid to thousands caught in the fighting.
McCain argues the United State has embarked on a failing strategy in Geneva of allowing Russia, Assads closest ally, to put pressure on him.
Russia has recently prevented the passage of a much-needed U.N. resolution on bringing aid to desperate Syrian civilians, he said. Such actions indicate that the Russian government is simply not a partner for peace in Syria and cannot be relied on to help secure a successful outcome.
McCain said he wants to change the balance of power on the ground but is calling for options far short of an Iraq-style invasion. He also said he was encouraged to hear that President Obama may begin considering different policy options for Syria.

Some old neocon was on Fox this morning singing this same tune.
Even if I had no clue about new world order, I'd still be wondering about the audacity of this march we've been on for decades to militarily dislodge other governments.
If they all were realistic enemies of the US, why do we domestically encourage Muslim Brotherhood, mosques, immigration of muslims en masse - right here inside America ?
If it were truly "national security" they were concerned with, the first order of business would be to keep the nations that are supposed "sources" of terrorism at arm's length.
And replacing their governments with our puppets would NOT make us more secure, it would simply breed resentment of US audacity at coming in and replacing their governments with our puppets.
What crisis?
Muslims are slaughtering Muslims - a good thing.
Anmd the guys winning right now - Bashir et al, are protecting the Christians the rebels want to exterminate.
Like the Grinch, McCain has termites in his brain>
McCain is a warmonger who doesn't even recognize the evil of the side he wants to "support"
Maybe an itty bitty teensy weeny air strike, so small that no one will notice, announced ahead of time.
Why can’t McRino just go away.......
He has no better argument than he did last year about this time. Leave’em alone and they will sort it out, or they won’t. But it is not our business.
Soros, too.
Well, John you f'n backstabbing prick ...strap on a jump suit, parachute in, lead the charge...
Make sure you bring John F' Kerry with you...
We don’t put “puppets” in power. We put people who don’t like us in power, then wonder why they end up siding against us. In this case, McCain is trying to help jihadis who are beheading Christians. What a putz.
Oh Wait' never mind...
Interesting link on some possibilities...

Woo hoo!! And we're now over 58%!! Go, FReepers!! Thank you all very much!! We can do this. |
I realize that there are a lot innocent civilians caught in the middle in Syria, and that’s a tragedy. I don’t give much of a darn about Islamist rebels or Assad’s goons getting theirs. But nobody wants to see innocent people getting hurt or killed in the crossfire (so to speak). I feel for those folks, I truly do.
That said, there’s just no good option that I can see for the U.S. except to stay out of it. To quote Wargames, it seems the only winning move is not to play.
There is a theory that the Saudis want us to invade Syria so that they can build a pipeline from Saudi Arabia to Europe.
The best idea I’ve heard in ages!
Go for it McQueer, you bastard.
It's not a theory.
Hey, Senator McCain, it sure looks like you’re on the wrong side. Both sides in Syria look bad but at least Assad protects the Christians whereas your Saudi-backed IslamoNazi pals eat them.
It is bad enough when your* “President” eats dogs.
Please stop sucking up the Saudi dictators’ money long enough to take a look at what you’re saying....please?
