He’s good on The Americans. That show is extremely amoral, but he plays the one character who represents American interests without the various failings that everyone else has.

A great actor even if he was a liberal. RIP, John Walton.

An outstanding actor and by all accounts a decent man, liberal politics notwithstanding. RIP.

“Though busy with a new role playing Mark Harmon’s father, Jackson “Jack” Gibbs on the popular CBS series “NCIS,” Waite said he wanted to “get re-involved in some level in my religion,” and went searching for a congregation that shared his progressive religious and political views.

He discovered Spirit of the Desert Presbyterian Fellowship, which meets Sunday evenings at United Church of the Desert on Warner Trail here.

“It was just what I was looking for,” said Waite, who lives in Palm Desert with his wife of 30 years, Linda.

The services are led by three retired pastors, including Chuck Rassieur. “We are strong advocates of peace and justice,” Rassieur said. “We are very welcoming to gays and gay issues.”

Ralph Waite was the youth minister at my church, and he gave me my first Bible when I was seven.

He didn’t become an actor until later.

Waite, the oldest of five children, was born in White Plains, New York, the son of Esther (née Mitchell) and Ralph H. Waite, a construction engineer. Before becoming an actor, Waite, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948, graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and briefly was a social worker. He earned a master’s degree from Yale University Divinity School and was a Presbyterian minister and religious editor at Harper & Row in New York City before deciding on a career in acting.

And the amazing thing is how many of us as kids watched it, and Little House, because they were so good.

You could put those two shows on a network in a continuous loop and it would draw better ratings than most of the crap on today.

The Waltons was a great series. I am always astounded by their self sufficiency. They grew their own food, raised animals, fixed their house, cars, machines, they hunted and fished. Drinking recipe, and shooting a gun were not a sin; men could be men and women could be women.
Just think, if we face the same conditions that the Waltons faced in the depression, the death rate today would be exponentially greater.
