I jumped at the last-minute invitation to hear P.J.O'Rourke comment on current events and tout his new book on the Boomer generation at the Commonwealth Club last night in San Francisco. What a disappointment! He unleashed a scathing---and not funny to me----attack on the Tea Party and Ted Cruz. He said, "This is why politics should not be left to amateurs. Boehner is an adult. Ted Cruz is not." Also added "The Tea Party is a big tree and unfortunately big trees attract a lot of squirrels." In the past I have relished his writing, from National Lampoon's High School Yearbook to "All the Trouble in the World" which kept me in stitches as I endured the vacation from hell years ago.
A conservative he is not! At least anymore! Left without buying the book. Too depressed.
The one with the infant floating face-down in the kiddie pool while the Mom gossips over the fence? Oh yeah.
Post 74 has a link to the PDF of the entire issue from Jan, 1975.
His comment about the cost of healthcare will remain with us for a long time. He said and I paraphrase, “If you think healthcare is expensive now, just wait until it is free.”
Mark Steyn is very funny but he comes out a theater tradition which I would naturally enjoy. Most of these newspaper “humorists” just don’t make me laugh.
At one time NatLamp had a link to the original article, which I posted on a thread back in ‘99. It lasted for about four hours before JimRob caught wind and deleted it.
Yeah, it did. We used to subscribe to it, but eventually it became so sophomoric and unfunny that we cancelled.
Not to belabor it but think of the days when Mark Twain, Bret Harte, James Townsend and Ambrose Beirce wrote for the papers, a tradition continuing on up to Will Rogers.
Another indication of just how far the papers have fallen.
Cats are rarely wrong. You, OTOH, are just typing what the cats tell you to.
Actually all I ever DO is what they tell me to.
And when I get that wrong I hear about it.
(Uh, don't look now, I think someone needs the door opened.) ;^)
