San Diego, the eight-largest city in America, elected a Republican as mayor by a 9% margin that surprised all the "experts," 54.5% to 45.5%. Republican city councilman Kevin Faulconer defeated Democratic Councilman David Alvarez in a city that has been trending both Democratic and Hispanic.
There are two hard lessons for the Democrats here in the election.
Lesson one, as noted by John Fund of NRO,
"..the vaunted Obama election model - flood the zone with negative attack ads and excite the base of the Democratic party - flopped. Faulconer defeated fellow City Council member David Alvarez by nine points in a city that Barack Obama carried by 63 percent to 37 percent only 15 months ago.
Democrats were stunned at the margin. In the November open primary, Democrats had won 54 percent of the ballots cast and were convinced they could win the runoff between Faulconer and Alvarez.
In the wake of Obamacare's very public and ongoing disaster, it is going to be harder for Democrats to excite their base and drive turnout. With a key mid-term election this year, that is terrible news for the Democrats. The election (and re-election) of The First Black President is no longer on the table. The best the Democrats can come up with in 2014 and 2016 is going to be demonization of the GOP, their perennial means of asking voters to ignore their own shortcomings."

Don’t believe the hype. Scott Walker’s recall election was supposed to be bad news for the Marxist in 2012.
Rino’s are experts at snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
That doesn't hide long term joblessness, losing your health insurance...ect
With all the hype the democrats tried selling, they can not run away from the bubble only they created!
I don’t care who wins or loses .. special elections, etc mean NOTHING. I don’t care if the Dim had won. It means NOTHING when it comes to the National stage and elections. Like the one post says here, the Walker recall election was supposed to be a big deal and hurt the Dims. It meant NOTHING.
The problem with reading the tea leaves in little snap shots as evidence of a bigger issue is, well .. they aren’t and then everyone acts surprised. It’s how the GOP elite rules ... they tell us that something is big, we believe it and do their bidding. Yeah that is a WAY oversimplification but you get my drift. Saying this means something is right up there with saying that Elway doesn’t play well in the cold but he sure plays well in above freezing so the Broncos will win the Super Bowl.
The San Diego mayoral election was largely driven by local issues, including a disgraced Democrat incumbent who was caught up in a sexual harassment scandal. Don't read it as an omen, good or bad.
For a large city in a liberal state, San Diego has a lot of conservatives. Most people think “California” and assume everyone there is Dem. You have to remember, San Diego is the largest US city that borders Mexico. Only when San Diego complained about illegal immigration did people like Duncan Hunter act and build a wall along California. Call them moderate, but they do have a breaking point. This election is another show of that.
This was a non-partisan special election, in by far the most right-leaning large city in California, in which the Republican ran on a scrupulously moderate platform and the Democrat conspicuously wed himself to public employee unions and Mexican nationalism ... and still got 45% of the vote. A conservative who takes much satisfaction from this win is kidding himself.
The Democrats cannot concede the election just yet - there just HAS to be a recount, and the recounts have to be continued until the Democrat is a winner by at least three votes.
The more local the election, the better Republicans do.
I think Republicans hold the majority of Governorships and state legislators.
Let's hope this trend continues.
While we continue to be sold out by national Republicans like John Boner and Miotch McConnell, they don't even realize the ground is shifting beneath them.
I, for one, am going to enjoy the crap out of the look on their faces when the floor falls beneath them.
Well summarized. In the San Diego of just 20 years ago, Faulconer would have won by 50 points.
“... the Walker recall election was supposed to be a big deal and hurt the Dims. It meant NOTHING.”
It did to the people in WI and the teachers union that were gutted by it!
Oh really? What happened in Virginia?
I’ve heard some of the GOP strategerists explain that away as “well, the Dems don’t have another Barack Obama up their sleeve.”
I hope that’s it.
In the 1988 election, Bush carried San Diego County by a vote of 523,143 to 333,264 for Dukakis.
I think the SD election was a straight up 2 person race.
The Dem strategy that worked in Va (and a good number of other locations) includes funding a libertarian candidate to bleed R votes and win with a Clintonian plurality.
The Dems understand the entitlement army won’t vote for anybody but a gravy dispenser. Where the non-Dem votes aren’t nearly as united in purpose.
You are smart to point this out. I believe the Chicago Fraud Machine has gone nationwide. Ann Coulter wrote a column this month regarding the demographic challenge Republicans have. And OUR leadership seems bereft of doing ANYTHING to excite the base.
I don’t think it is impossible, but this is not going to be a cakewalk.
When I heard the Republican governor of Nevada was GIVING UP on enforcing the WRITTEN LAW banning sodomite “marriage” in his state, I got sick to my stomach. The LAW ought to be enforced. Obama’s habit of picking and choosing what laws to enforce (including his own piece of crap Death Panel Law) seems to be spreading to other entities.
This means, essentially, that there IS NO LAW.
Interesting. Thanks for posting. Informative thread BUMP!
