[history]
The Washington Redskins issued a scathing response to two lawmakers Monday after they called for the team to change its controversial name.
Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a letter that the league is on the

My ancestors came here in the late 1600’s I am as native as anyone else. The wife unit, part Apache, gets irritated when I check Native American on forms.

I repeat myself from the fall, but I do believe that “Washington Redskins” is indeed patently offensive to many people sensitive to past and present treatment of our indigenous people.
Therefore, the team should be re-named the “Landover Redskins”.

One of the English Premiere League soccer clubs - Tottenham United, maybe? - still uses an unofficial nickname of “yids” dating back to a time where a large percentage of the population in that area was Jewish. Not so much anymore, but the fans still use the term.

Of all the different animal nicknames for teams, the one you usually don't see is Raccoons (and yes I like the animal hence my nickname here). Some teams do have raccoon mascots, like the Hudson Valley Renegades and the Tennessee Titans; and the image of a "masked bandit" "stealing a base" is funny, etc. but I think teams are afraid of the potential chants: GO COONS GO!

I remember the American Indian Movement. Probably the first time in history that tribes who slaughtered each other joined to shakedown the whitemen back in the 1970s.

They should change the name to the Washington Palefaces to jab at the politically correct.
To: windsorknot
Should just shorten the name to the “Washington Reds”....it would be most appropriate.

The "activist" asked Mr.Praeger how he would like it I there were a team called the Texas Jewboys. Praeger responded: "I would be overjoyed because FINALLY, after 5000yrs someone would be cheering for us."
LOL!!!
BTW, you don't hear any Americans of Scandinavian descent objecting to the name "Minnesota Vikings," which could be taken as portraying an image of primitive savagery. Same for Irish-Americans re the name "Boston Celtics."

I think that because the Redskins are based in D.C. if they're forced to change the name, their new name should reflect their fan base ... specifically reflective of some of the politicians currently in power.
Thus, with the "Big 4" Democrat Socialist leaders in mind (i.e., obama, Reid, Pelosi and Holder), the team name would be changed from "Redskins" to "Fourskins".

What I am observing is a renewed effort to bring tribes back into the Democrat base. They need the tribes for the election. In Whatcom county, there is a big push to limit the well water to farms, something that had been put on the back burner for several years, after the huge water allocation that was promised to the coal terminal that the unions want.
Maria Cantwell has been a big supporter of the GPT coal terminal. She was the person who arranged the deal for SSA to operate a receiving terminal in China. The tribes in WA oppose terminals, almost universally.
So Cantwell is trying to make it look as though she is on the side of the tribes by insinuating herself into this silly argument.

Speaking of the Hudson Valley, in the artsy-fartsy, progressive-minded (they still pride themselves with being the first town in Rockland County to elect an openly gay mayor) village of Nyack the high school still calls their football team the (horrors!) INDIANS. Obviously an oversight on the part of the politically correct idiots.

"You remind me of a college team out west who changed their name to Fighting Whiteys as a form of protest against Indian team names. They even had team shirts made up Everythings going to be all white It backfired when they were deluged with orders for the shirt from all over the US. Still have mine" =======================================================
I had that shirt as well and wore it out.
I read a few years ago the team changed their name again saying they had made their point.......yeah right!

HAIL to the REDSKINSTo really make the ultra-PC liberal crowd's heads explode, restore the lyrics of 1959-1961 when the song ended with a rousing:
Fight for Old Dixie!

That's them. Notice they didn't call themselves the "Native American Movement".
To quote a famous AIM leader:
"The word Indian comes from 'Indios' which means 'with God'. I'd rather be with God than a native American"
