I quote what a visiting pastor said often in Free Republic because it so often relates to the topic at hand. But it has never related as well as it does in this thread, so I post it again:

Where would the early church have been if they had put their faith in Rome?

Beginning in the 300’s they did put their faith in Rome. That’s much of what Martin Luther objected to.

Diversity means all races, sexes, religions, ethnicities and income groups united in leftism and the goal of dismantling America. The last part is key. Anyone of any category who does not share that goal is not considered “diverse”.

pieceofthepuzzle: “We will only become a cohesive country when we start to celebrate our COMMONALITY again.
Diversity of origin but commonality of purpose.”

Our COMMONALITY draws us together as a Nation
DIVERSITY separates us as a Nation by identifying individual differences , and preferences.
The DIFFERENCES are a personal choice , for purposes of self-identification , heritage , and are voluntary ,
and are not IMPOSED by edict or fiat .
We are a Nation of immigrants, organized by common purpose which we call "Americans" to support
common Borders , Language , and Culture .
But as a Nation , we have the understanding and depth of character to accept outsiders
as long as they are willing to accept the culture and language of their new found home .
Those that refuse to accept the language and culture of the country in which they live are destined to remain identified as "Outsiders",
and by their refusal to accept common language and culture, will never be accepted into mainstream America , by their own choice.

We have no room for any people who do not act and vote simply as Americans, and as nothing else. Moreover, we have as little use for people who carry religious prejudices into our politics as for those who carry prejudices of caste or nationality. We stand unalterably in favor of the public-school system in its entirety. We believe that English, and no other language, is that in which all the school exercises should be conducted.

By her very nature, America represents a wide “diversity” of peoples from all walks of life and from all over the world.

That isn’t what irks me about this ad.
What irks me is that they sang “America the Beautiful” in languages other than English!

When people want to become US citizens they must among other things “Be able to read, write, and speak basic English.” (from the Basic Requirements for US Naturalization)

In addition, they must take the following oath IN ENGLISH:
“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”

Now if this ad showed the diversity of all Americans (both native born and naturalized) all singing “America the Beautiful” IN ENGLISH then I doubt anybody would have had any objections to it and it could have very well been one of the best ads of the Super Bowl.

But as it is, it flopped big time.

It’s all fine until it all comes crashing down. Unfortunately, it will, despite the optimism of the Limbaugh’s and Hannity’s. This kind of lunacy can’t endure.

Civil war is just a matter of time.

The funny thing about the ‘diversity’ crowd on the left is that they are absolutely intolerant of diversity of opinion - when the opinion differs from theirs.

Extremely true except for the "funny" part.

We will only become a cohesive country when we start to celebrate our COMMONALITY again. Diversity of origin but commonality of purpose. The Left is tearing this country apart. I hope there will be a road to recovery someday. That road is not close, though.

We turned off that road and have been headed away from it ever since. As long as we “progress” in the direction we are going, we stray ever farther from the truth.

True progress will begin again when we see the error we have made and do an about face. Unfortunately the way that sort of thing happens on this sort of scale is how it happened to Germany in 1945. It’s involuntary.

There's no such thing as an American identity anymore -- if there ever really was one.

When you concealed-carry guns are allowed in one state and private ownership of firearms is effectively outlawed in another, you may as well be dealing with people and governing officials from two different planets.

It's in Coca-Cola's best interest to spout this "diversity" nonsense far and wide. They're in the business of selling soft drinks, not unifying nations ... and they don't really give a sh!t who buys their products.

My Great Grand father was born in Sicily, came here with not much more than the shirt on his back. When he passed away he owned half a city block in Buffalo NY. When his daughter (my grandmother) complained about needing to learn English he told her that you live in America you will learn to speak English.

“But at the Super Bowl earlier this week, Coca-Cola asked us to consider a different vision of Americanism,”

The entire basis of this jackasses argument is cartoonish bigotry. NOT the timeless ideals and Principles proffered by the Founding Fathers. No. Stupid Leftist Bigotry. That's it...

This is 2014 and the language has been corrupted to imply that lies are the real truth. The REAL truth is that “diversity” as it is used today is a codeword for THE ultimate segregation. Segregation, one from another, complete and utter.

EXCELLENT, NEEDED TO BE REPEATED.

You’re right. And they’ve been working on it through political correctness for 30 years now and some people are even afraid to speak their minds.

Appeals to diversity utterly fail for one reason. While people may indeed take pride in the origins of their ancestors, to carry on too much of the traditions of “the old country” causes personal and familial stagnation.

For example, in talking with a young man who describes himself as “Irish-American”, I found an interesting case of Americanism. Did he immigrate from Ireland? No. Is he an Irish citizen? No. Has he ever been to Ireland? No, but he would like to visit. Does he speak Gaelic? No. Is he a Catholic? Yes, but not practicing.

Truthfully, he has integrated. He is not “Irish-American”, he is American, of Irish descent. If he ever does visit Ireland, it will be as an American, and for the most part, he will be seen by Irish people as an American.

This is the typical path.

But diversity implies that he should have been ghettoized with other Irish people, that he should speak Gaelic, that he should be totally caught up in Irish, not American culture, and obey his priest’s dictates. In other words, handicapped from being a successful American citizen by being mired in the same life as his forebears.

Personal and familial stagnation.

Diversity also implies some degree of shame for being an American. Why else would anyone feel embarrassed in saying they are an American? Why say you are Irish-American?

American does not have much of a definition beyond citizenship. It does not imply a race or religion, except for non-Americans caught up in an “us vs. them” attitude.

But at the same time, being an American *means* things. Important and powerful things.

I agree. Diversity without unity is useless. We can all bring our various ideas to the table, but if all we care about is seeing our personal idea adopted, problems will never be solved.

It’s very simple.
