Most Mexicans don't have a clue as to what Cinco de Mayo is about. I used to ask the Mexican employees that worked for me what Cinco de Mayo was about and they would say " a day to get drunk?".

Cinco de Mayo is Karl Marx birth day.

and Earth Day is Vladimir Lenin’s birthday.

Cinco de Mayo is a stretched interpretation of an unrecognized Mexican holiday that was promoted by makers of Corona Beer and Jose Cuervo tequila.

I thought this was the reason for the Mexican holiday....

Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the very next port of call after the Titantic’s stop in New York. This shipment of mayonnaise would have been the largest ever delivered to Mexico but as we all know the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank. The cargo was lost forever. The people of Mexico who were crazy about mayonnaise and eagerly awaiting its delivery were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great that they declared a Nation Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning ocurs each year on May 5th and is known of course as -— Sinko de Mayo.
