it is surprising that this hasn’t yet been resolved in what remains of our “free market economy”
every time a fast food outfit adds a healthier item to its menu, it seems to taste awful
(and almost nobody keeps buying it).
I really do believe they COULD offer some healtier items (at least give you some options instead of those terrible white bread buns! and cut down on the chemical overload that seems to be in some fast food these days? and reduce the grease)...just those 3 small steps would make for some healthier products),..,.maybe not strictly 100 percent “Health Food” but still a few items that are better for us.....and taste good ........? A whole lot of us would buy such items if they would only put them on offer...
again, in the free market.

I eat surprisingly little junk or processed food altogether. A few years ago I went to just get a burger that wasn’t good for me as a treat and cost a fortune. It tasted like the wrapper it came in. Now I make my own junk food when I really crave it - it’s healthier by comparison and at least it has taste.
I agree with you that fast food restaurants do not put 100% of their food knowledge in making healthier (and more expensive) ingredients taste great. They want foods that can be cheaply obtained, distributed and prepared easily, and not have much risk of going bad. Salt, yucky fake sweetness and grease hook people to the taste.
