Formalizing Censorship through the IRS: Where's the Outrage?

As of February 1, IRS Reg-134417-13 ruling, intended to curtail political participation by non-profit groups, received 20,880 comments. The IRS will take comments until February 27, 2014.

Our population is a little over three hundred and ten million. In view of that, twenty thousand comments is a pitiful showing. It most certainly is not enough to demand thorough rejection of this extraordinary ruling. I can only conclude that most Americans are unaware of the ruling, let alone know what it actually proposes. So let us be clear.

The IRS Reg-134417-13 ruling proposes to forbid non-profits to hold voter registration drives, advertise, promote, and engage in activities regarding any political incumbent or candidate. It forbids fundraisers for political incumbents and candidates, prohibits any kind of political activity including rallies, political mailings, teas, Meet & Greets, forums and gatherings of any kind that deal with political issues. It forbids a non-profit to support or oppose, discuss, or question those seeking political office. It forbids the gathering of signatures on petitions with political content of any kind, including nominating petitions and the advice, suggestion or request that the electorate support or oppose House and Senate bills.

By extension, such drastic restrictions would be applicable at every level of government -- federal, state, and local -- and to all political offices, agencies and departments that involves any kind of support or opposition to any kind of legislation whatsoever. There is little to no difference between a 501c(3) and a 501c(4). Once applied to one, you can bet the ruling will soon be applied to the other.

Just wait until the Republicans get in charge and use the IRS to end the New York Times and CBS. This is a slippery slope that will not end well.

Isn’t this about tax exempt status?

By November ‘14, the despot Obama will have written regulations that make thinking the phrase “Tea Party “ a national crime.

To utter the words will result in extreme punishment by the neo IRS

Unaware or don't believe that comments will make any difference to the decision plus their opposing comment will get them on an audit list. The Obama Administration has shown that it is tyrannical and will try and destroy those who oppose them. How many potential commenters have concluded that written critiques only serve to target them. The solution to Americas sickness won't be in evaluating proposed regulations.

Rather than hammering the administration on its incompetence and criminality, the GOP has elected to give the Democrats an escape hatch on Obamacare and to carry out a bloody civil war over immigration.

I think the problem to some extent is that too many Tea Party supporters/Conservatives/Libertarians still expect the Republican Party to make arguments like this for them. It’s not going to happen.

The Republican leadership will give lip service to defending free speech and fighting corruption (especially when they’re trying to distract people with whatever new Socialist-lite scheme that Amnesty/Bailout Boy Paul Ryan has conconted), but the reality is that they don’t mind the IRS going after Tea Party and like-minded groups... because they want to try to protect Mitch and the Old Boys Club in the Senate.

The GOP-e is floundering in a sea of empty proposals and bland, forgettable (but expensive) consultant-suggested campaign slogans. History will be on our side, if we let it- but we have to return to making these arguments ourselves...
