In 2013, the US lost 30 people a day to gun violence. Obama shouldn't let us forget

The president should be talking about guns (and gun control) a lot more. This goes way beyond horrific school shootings.

President Obama opened his remarks at McGavock High School in Nashville, Tennessee with a brief mourning of the death of a student there on Tuesday, the day of his State of the Union speech. Obama mentioned gun violence once in his address to the nation. Again yesterday, the bulk of his speech was about education policy, not gun control.

The fact that McGovock was itself the site of a gun fatality only gave a glancing emphasis on the firearm policies he says he is trying to move forward. The setting perhaps emphasized just as much the futility of the rhetorical gesture. President Obama needs to talk more about gun policies in this country, but he has to do it differently. As horrific as school shootings are, gun violence takes more lives outside our classrooms than in them.

In the five years of Obama's presidency, mass shootings have been the one reliable catalyst for a presidential push on our nation's uniquely liberal firearm laws. He broke a three-year streak of non-engagement on the issue in January 2011, after the shooting of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and 17 other people in Tucson, Arizona, giving one speech and writing one op-ed calling for more legislation. Then, the White House was for the most part silent for another 10 months, until Newtown. That tragedy brought a flurry of urgent officials pleas: 18 sets of remarks in five months, according to C-SPAN. After that, another season of silence, until the Naval Yard shootings in September 2013....

Have no lives been saved from death or serious injury by citizens armed with firearms?
Why are such uses of firearms not reported by our press, presumably devoted to informing the public about important matters of general interest?

McGavock High School named for this very politically incorrect character:

Randal William McGavock
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lt. Col. Randal William McGavock

Nashville, Tennessee
Died May 12, 1863
Raymond, Mississippi
Resting place
Mount Olivet Cemetery
Nationality American
Education University of Nashville
Harvard Law School
Occupation Politician
Planter

Spouse(s) Seraphina Deery
Randal William McGavock (1826–1863) was an American lawyer, Democratic politician, Southern planter, and Confederate Lt. Colonel.[1][2][3][4][5][6] He served as the Mayor of Nashville, Tennessee from 1858 to 1859.

Early life

He was born on August 10, 1826 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was a fourth-generation Irish-American. His paternal grandfather was Randal McGavock (1766–1843), who served as Mayor of Nashville from 1824 to 1825 and owned the Carnton plantation. His father, Jacob McGavock, fought in the Creek War of 1813–1814 with Andrew Jackson. His maternal grandfather was Felix Grundy (1775–1840), U.S. Congressman from Tennessee from 1829 to 1838 and 13th United States Attorney General from 1838 to 1840.]His mother was Louisa Caroline (Grundy) McGavock.
He attended a private academy, The Classical and Mathematical Seminary run by Professor Moses Stevens (1790–1841) in Nashville, which closed down in 1846.[5] From 1843 to 1846, he attended the University of Nashville. In 1847, he enrolled at the Harvard Law School, where he was active in the debating club called Kent Club and the Moot court. He received his law degree from the Harvard Law School in 1849.He then went on a twenty-month tour of Europe, Asia and Africa. He wrote articles about his experiences abroad for the Daily Nashville Union and published them in a book in 1854

Career

Upon his return from Europe, he worked as a lawyer in Nashville. He joined the A.O.M.C., a fraternal organization whose members wore black robes and hoods during ceremonies. He also oversaw his family plantations in Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky.

He was active in the Tennessee Democratic Party. For example, he canvassed for James Buchanan in the 1856 campaign. He served as Mayor of Nashville from 1858 to 1859. He had won the election thanks to the Irish vote.[3] In 1860, he campaigned for John C. Breckinridge. He was a strong proponent of states’s rights.

Prior to the American Civil War of 1861–1865, he established a militia in Tennessee among the Irish. Meanwhile, his wife founded the Ladies Soldiers’ Friend Society, a patriotic group that included Sarah Childress Polk, the widow of President James Polk (1795–1849). During the war, he served as Lt. Colonel of the 10th Tennessee C.S.A. in the Confederate States Army.He bought their uniforms. In 1861, he was imprisoned in Fort Warren on Georges Island in Massachusetts for five months. In 1862, he resumed the fight. However, he was killed in the Battle of Raymond near Raymond, Mississippi on May 12, 1863.
Personal life
He married Seraphina Deery in 1855. He was first buried in Raymond, but his sister Ann and her husband, Judge Henry Dickenson made arrangements for the body to be brought to their home in Columbus, Mississippi. Finally, on St. Patrick's Day, 1866, he was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville during a ceremony conducted by the Masons.[1][

I would bet that 29 of those 30 live in places with very restrictive gun laws.

Gun Control that makes sense.

In 1863 a Democrat shot and killed Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States .

In 1881 a left wing radical Democrat shot James Garfield, President of the United States, who later died from the wound.

In 1963 a radical left wing socialist shot and killed John F. Kennedy, President of the United States .

In 1975 a left wing radical Democrat fired shots at Gerald Ford, President of the United States .

In 1983 a registered Democrat shot and wounded Ronald Reagan, President of the United States .

In 1984 James Hubert, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 22 people in a McDonalds restaurant.

In 1986 Patrick Sherrill, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 15 people in an Oklahoma post office.

In 1990 James Pough, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 10 people at a GMAC office.

In 1991 George Hennard, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 23 people in a Luby’s cafeteria.

In 1995 James Daniel Simpson, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 5 coworkers in a Texas laboratory.

In 1999 Larry Asbrook, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 8 people at a church service.

In 2001 a left wing radical Democrat fired shots at the White House in a failed attempt to kill George W. Bush, President of the US .

In 2003 Douglas Williams, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 7 people at a Lockheed Martin plant.

In 2007 a registered Democrat named Seung - Hui Cho, shot and killed 32 people in Virginia Tech.

In 2010 a mentally ill registered Democrat named Jared Lee Loughner, shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed 6 others.

In 2011 a registered Democrat named James Holmes, went into a movie theater and shot and killed 12 people.

In 2012 Andrew Engeldinger, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 7 people in Minneapolis .

In 2013 a registered Democrat named Adam Lanza, shot and killed 26 people in a school.

As recently as Sept 2013, an angry Democrat shot 12 at a Navy ship yard.
One could go on, but you get the point, even if the media does not. Clearly, there is a problem with Democrats and guns.

No NRA member, Tea Party member, or Republican conservatives were involved.

SOLUTION: It should be illegal for Democrats to own guns.

Best idea I've heard to date.

Are we sure about these numbers? 30 per day?

I believe that number is correct. However 60% of that number is for suicides. So the actual number of accidents and homicides involving firearms is about 12 per day.

IMHO, the number one threat to our national security would be a population that has been disarmed by the government.

Okay. That does sound more like it.

So we’ll get rid of 18 gun deaths per day, and wind up with 18 razor blade deaths per day. Great.

They they’ll ram razor blade control down our throats.

Not too long ago (within the last 6-8 months), there was an even more comprehensive list making the rounds, that not only had more items, but had brief citations and expanded details for the source of each shooter’s political affiliation. For example, I think it was Holmes who actually worked on Obama’s campaign in CO. Notably, I think it also had the Columbine shooters, and their families’ affiliations.

I wish I could find that list again.

Roughly, an average of 30,000 Americans die each year from influenza. (It is not a nice way to go, as you might suspect.)

I would speculate a majority of those deaths involve Obama’s sons.

We need to ban smoke detectors to protect children from firearm violence.

Why not? It’s as logically connected as banning guns to protect children from firearm violence.

What part of Criminals Don’t Obey Laws isn’t clear?

Jeez, liberals piss me off. It’s literally the attack of the stupid, by the stupid, for the stupid.

And manipulative.

And dishonest.

And hypocrites.

And scheming.

And flat-out lies.

Evil aliens aren’t going to come from outer space, folks. They’re already here - and they vote Democrat. After all, who else could consistently run an anti-human political party?
