Joe Namath Says He’s Had Brain-Related Medical Issues

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New York Jets legend Joe Namath says he’s “improved” after going through “some things medically” that could be tied to concussions suffered during his playing days.

Namath made the comments in a CBS interview to be aired the morning of Super Bowl XLVIII. “I’ve seen some things on my brain. But I’ve had some treatment, and I’ve improved,” Namath told Rita Braver of “CBS Sunday Morning.”

Namath, whose knee problems have been well documented, said the body is “just not designed” to play football. A federal judge nixed preliminary approval of a $765 million settlement for players suffering the effects of concussions earlier this month, saying the dollar figure may be on the low side. More than 4,500 former players, including Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett, are suing the NFL.

Despite all that, a recent poll said 85 percent of players would choose to play in the Super Bowl with a concussion.

Alcohol could have had something to do with it. Still, multiple concussions can’t be good.

And most of them would do it all over again. Life is hard.

How many of these “brain related” issues are related to alcoholism and drug use by the players? Does the NFL ask for that information, or is that too nosy as former players and family members line up for their big pay-off?

Since ESPN reported that the majority of ex-players declare bankruptcy within five years of retiring, many of them do need some cash.

Just having some fun picking on Joe. Concussions are, of course, not good. I’m willing to bet Joe would do it all over again. If anyone actually thought football was safe, they aren’t too bright to begin with.

Joe, don’t think drinking enough whiskey to float a battleship might do that as well?

Now,you can’t find a former player that doesn’t suffer from concussions. The players would scream,if you restricted the number of years that they could play by position.

Wonder how Terry Bradshaw will be in another 5 years. He got his bell rung a lot. he finished one quarter and couldn’t remember a play.

It’s similar to seeing “good wrecks” in NASCAR.

“The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat...”

There’s the punchline and the whole reason for the interview in the first place. The Gaystapo and the current administration want to emasculate men and feminize them so that they won’t rise up against the progressive Commies tyrants. Taking away the most “holy” of sports that is a part of creating a manly man during youth is sports, particulatly football. They are trying to manipulate society no question.

Having worked for a neuropathologist at a world famous hospital I think I know a *tiny* bit about this.Brain injuries and the problems they can cause are a medical issue...not a political one of societal one as Rush claims. The head injuries that NFL players,NHL players, boxers, etc suffer either can or cannot cause serious, lasting problems down the line.Of course athletes aren't the only ones who suffer head injuries.Kids falling off bikes, folks falling in the shower and car accidents victims, among others, suffer them too.I'll bet that head injuries are a serious enough issue for society in general that the top medical minds in neurology, neurosurgery and neuropathology should vigorously focus on it both in hospitals, doctors’ offices and laboratories. They should use scanners, microscopes and the most powerful computers available to gather and analyze data and come up with conclusions.

Actually a pretty terrifying PBS special on this topic.
League of Denial...
It actually looks like it’s more then concussions. Just the day to day impacts in practice and play seem to result in CTE. If the research confirms this it’s really bad news for the sport.

A lot of steelers, and a lot of football players from back then, aren’t so lucky.
