Iran can now build and deliver nukes, US intel reports

Iran now has all the technical infrastructure to produce nuclear weapons should it make the political decision to do, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper wrote in a report to a Senate intelligence committee published Wednesday. However, he added, it could not break out to the bomb without being detected.

In the “US Intelligence Worldwide Threat Assessment,” delivered to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Clapper reported that Tehran has made significant advances recently in its nuclear program to the point where it could produce and deliver nuclear bombs should it be so inclined.

“Tehran has made technical progress in a number of areas — including uranium enrichment, nuclear reactors, and ballistic missiles — from which it could draw if it decided to build missile-deliverable nuclear weapons,” Clapper wrote. “These technical advancements strengthen our assessment that Iran has the scientific, technical, and industrial capacity to eventually produce nuclear weapons. This makes the central issue its political will to do so.”

In the past year alone, the report states, Iran has enhanced its centrifuge designs, increased the number of centrifuges, and amassed a larger quantity of low-enriched uranium hexafluoride. These advancements have placed Iran in a better position to produce weapons-grade uranium. . .

Based on my assessment, Iran has three nukes and working on the 4th. Eight is the magic number. However, with the sanctions essentially eased, they will be greedy and the magic number will likely be 10 to 12. Any time after reaching the magic number, the attack on Israel is a go, but no later than the 20 nuke mark.

Why doesn’t Israel attack? Because they have crossed the line where a conventional attack would solve the problem. The next step they see is a nuclear attack. They can wait a couple of years before that has to be a go.

The most influential constituents on both sides have told their pocket politicians to take no action against Iran. The political/regulator class wants to allow Iran to finish building its nuclear weapons forces as it desires. And as such political folks often write, they would like to see a fight between Iran, Iran’s allies and Israel alone.

Our nation’s bipartisan leadership (favored constituents of politicians, sponsors of media,...) is morally bankrupt and has no will to fight for what is right.

War seldom follows the plans of strategists. As soon as Israel attacks sites in Iran the Iranians will retaliate against any U.S. targets within range. This would include U.S. naval vessels in the Persian Gulf and bases in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf states. The U.S. will be immediately drawn into the conflict. If the Iranians attempt to interdict international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz the world economy will suffer as long as the Strait is blocked. This could draw Europe and the oil producing states around the Persian Gulf region into the fight. What response Russia and China decide to take could make the difference between a regional war and Armageddon.

The story I posted didn't show up on the FR Search using the headline. It may be because the headline on your story is slightly different in wording:

1/29 Iran can now build and deliver nukes (Clapper to Senate)

1/31 Iran can now build and deliver nukes, US intel reports

Hey, I hear you. The search doesn’t always work for me either. I haven’t seen it in writing but I think the ‘dupe’ also serves to crosslink comments, on top of giving the Mod the opportunity to lock one. I can’t help but be apologetic whenever I do it. Happened to me numerous times...don’t sweat it.

The default on the search is ‘keywords’. I try to remember to change that, as keywords are subjective, and do 2-3 single-word searches for ‘title’. Works better for me now than keywords ever did.
