School officials at the University of Minnesota are working with black student and facility organizations after they wrote a letter to the school’s president about the racial descriptions given in crime alerts. The letter, sent on Dec. 6, 2013, was issued by members of the African American and African Studies, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Black Graduate and Professional Student Association, Black Men’s Forum, Black Student Union and Huntley House for African American Males. It was directed to University President Eric Kaler and Pamela Wheelock, the vice president of University Services.

Crime alerts from say, Seton Hall, or Loyola Baltimore, are seriously boring.
The ONLY thing that varies is the number of perpetrators and whether a weapon was used, and whether there was an assault as well as a robbery.
So the UM groups are absolutely right - description is unnecessary.

Of course. This is so stupid. Do they sincerely think that black men will stop committing a disproportionate amount of crime, or that people will stop knowing that fact, because the info is not publicized somewhere?
All I can see happening is people will be vulnerable to crimes committed by the less likely white perpetrator. But I’m sure they’ll find a way around that, a la G. Zimmerman the “white hispanic”.
What has happened is that as a gun-free zone for students and faculty, the ‘U’ has become, over the years, a favorite “hunting ground” for the Somalis that live in the Cedar-Riverside area.
Wait just a minute! That description will cause police to unfairly zero in on any tall person. Plus it's possible that folks wear t-shirts because they can't afford anything better. Do we really want to put an entire economic class at risk of arrest?
No, it is better to put out no perp description at all. Of course, no one will ever get caught. But that's a small price to pay to live in a progressive society, doncha know?
I was sure this was from the Onion:

I live in the far southern suburbs and almost got rolled Tuesday night. The guy wasn’t from my neighborhood.
Next thing you know, there will no longer be descriptions of anyone who commits a crime. Stories will read, “Something robbed XXX liquor store at gunpoint around 1:40 PM today. No description of the robber was provided. Police ignore the call due to insufficient information.”
Why bother?
As someone on the local morning show pointed out: "The groups calling for this certainly have no problem identifying themselves by race."
Seems a bit hypocritical.
Another point brought up:
If your child was kidnapped or otherwise missing, would you want their race included with the description?
“...efforts to reduce crime should never be at the expense of our Black men, or any specific group of people likely to be targeted. In addition to causing Black men to feel unsafe and distrusted, racial profiling is proven to inflict negative psychological effects on its victims.”
Best solution is to stop reporting crime. Then everyone will feel safer and have more esteem.
Richard Pryor once felt that way too....

I have experience with this type if idiocy. 40 years ago my teenaged brother, who had never been in trouble, was picked up for investigation of a crime. He had the same name (our last name is the 3rd most common in the phone book) as the perp, and they grilled him mightily. He provided an alibi, and denied everything....
Turns out he was the wrong race. Even though they knew that, they really didn’t want to let him go, and put him through a bunch of garbage and wasted an entire day of his life.
But then how will the university be able to take race into account in deciding whether or not to choose black applicants?

Why not eliminate gender as well? The men who were complaining about including race should be just as upset by the suspects being described as male.
The African American and African Studies, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Black Graduate and Professional Student Association, Black Men’s Forum, Black Student Union and Huntley House for African American Males doesn’t want a criminal suspect’s skin color mentioned when he happens to be Black?
Proving once again, that liberalism is indeed a mental disorder.
