Residents in the western Panhandle remained indoors and off the roads on Wednesday as freezing temperatures caused a layer of ice and dusting of snow to linger.
Emergency officials said Wednesday afternoon that numerous bridges in the western Panhandle could remain closed through Thursday morning because of the icy conditions.
Temperatures were expected to climb to about 35 degrees but overcast skies would prevent much melting.
After sunset Tuesday, officials closed the two bridges crossing Pensacola Bay and connecting the city to rest of the state.
Panhandle counties further west also announced numerous bridge and road closings.
The region hasn't seen snow and ice for years.
Sporadic power outages were reported throughout the area because of iced power lines.
"Every major bridge and roadway in Escambia County is either closed or experiencing major issues and even neighborhood streets are icy and dangerous," Escambia county officials said in a public-safety update on Wednesday.
The region had a dusting of snow that melted quickly in 2010. It has been more than a decade since the area had snow that remained on the ground for a while, according to weather records.
Schools, government offices, even military bases were closed or operating with limit staffing Wednesday.
Emergency officials warned residents about falling tree limbs and downed power lines caused by the ice buildup.
Farther west, officials in Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties also announced numerous bridge and road closings and encouraged residents to stay inside and off the streets until the ice melts. Residents in normally sunny vacation destinations including Fort Walton Beach and Destin were urged to remain indoors and off the icy roads.
John Hofstad, public works director for Okaloosa County, told The Northwest Florida Daily News (http://bit.ly/1fdtdP7) that all roads and bridges in that area were iced over Wednesday.
"There's not enough sand to go around," he said.
Since they’ve started naming every storm I wonder when they’ll eventually get to “storm who must not be named.”
Please check in?
Yup, it’s a Gremlin, drop a Chrysler 360 in it, beef up the suspension and you got a bad a** street rod.
That’s down in the V’s...
I’d vote for a 6 liter aluminum LS, but you got the basics right.
The Gremlin was apparently an attempt to make a “compact” car by chopping off the trunk of an existing body. (AMC was financially challenged.)
Do you guys have a real time measurement of the (S to N) flux of illegals there?
It was essentially a modified Hornet.
Yes. Kind of interesting to trace the corporate history.
Nash, Hudson, AMC, Chrysler, Fiat.
I had a Wheel Horse garden tractor that was mfg when they were part of AMC.
We used to, but the BP has had their mouths Duct Taped shut, by you know who.
I thought it was a gremlin.
I couldn't remember the "donor" vehicle.
BTY, where did the Eagle body come from?
Funny you bring that up, years ago we built one with a 383 motor trans and rear end out of a Plymouth Fury. That little car was quick.
Yep, it’s a Gremlin. Pacer had wrap around rear tail lights.
In high school a friend drove a Pacer. We liked it because it drew little attention from the cops when we were driving around up to no good.
The Eagle was an awd Hornet with jacked up suspension.
Really a pioneer of the modern small SUV that is everywhere today.
Here in Indiana where we have the b’ball team, there are still a few Pacers wheeling around in the team color scheme.
There are still a bunch of Eagles spread around western states in mountainous communities (along with old Dodge Power Wagons).
The interesting thing to me about the Eagles was that they had a wide range of power-trains including many manual transmission offerings)
There was a show on the History Channel about the AMC Javelin.
The Alabama highway patrol used them for a while. They were not your ordinary cop car. They said they would 160 mph.
