That’s only fair - since it was conservatives who invited the state into marriage in the first place - in exchange for a tax break. Once that happened, it was inevitable that everybody who could count to two would demand equal access.
That is a bald faced lie, it predates the United States in the colonies, and of course thousands of years before that. Do you really think this nation was founded on a law that you had to be a member of a Christian church (or mosque) to marry?
Even at the federal level the first marriage law was passed in 1780, added to in 1794, and 1798, and 1802.
What tax break?
Nice try at blaming conservatives.
It’s Bush’s fault, right?
Government role in marriage existed long before that, for the protection of children and women.
Wow! I had no idea that our federal tax laws were retroactive to the beginning of time.
I seldom comment on ignorant statements by others but yours have to be at the all time top of the list.
A stable family is important to a stable society. Governments for thousands of years kept track of who married who and not just for tax reasons.
If you accept the idea a family of one man and one woman raising children is good, then it is a minor thing to give that family a tax break.
But governments has long been in the “marriage business” certainly longer then there were federal taxes.
