Renée Fleming has hit some important pop-culture markers in the past few months. In September, she went on David Lettermans show to sing the Top Ten list. Now, shes going to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Musical attention at the Super Bowl usually focuses on the halftime show, but since this kind of attention is so rare in classical music these days, and since Fleming is the first opera singer ever to be accorded this, well, honor, the announcement has caused quite a stir.

Caterwauling mediocrity. (Actually, superior at caterwauling) A recording of the Jimmy Hendrix Woodstock reveille (in honor of the pending 45th anniversary) would be better.

I think you may be thinking of Roger Doucet but he passed away in 1981 so I am not sure. His rendition of O Canada at the Montreal Forum was legendary.

Thanks, but no. Doucet was perfect, technically, but this guy (of whom I’m thinking) had some serious pipes.
