(Reuters) - Dinesh D'Souza, a conservative commentator and best-selling author, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for arranging excessive campaign contributions to a candidate for the U.S. Senate.
According to an indictment made public on Thursday in federal court in Manhattan, D'Souza around August 2012 reimbursed people who he had directed to contribute $20,000 to the candidate's campaign. The candidate was not named in the indictment.
Attempts to reach D'Souza and a lawyer representing him were unsuccessful.
D'Souza was charged in the indictment with one count of making illegal contributions in the names of others, and one count of causing false statements to be made.
Federal law in 2012 limited primary and general election campaign contributions to $2,500 each, for a total of $5,000, from any individual to any one candidate.
"As we have long said, this Office and the FBI take a zero tolerance approach to corruption of the electoral process," the U.S. Attorney for Manhattan, Preet Bharara, said in a statement released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Bharara is an Obama appointee.
Born in Mumbai, India, D'Souza, 52, is a former policy adviser to President Ronald Reagan, and has been affiliated with conservative organizations such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
He also directed a 2012 film critical of President Barack Obama, "2016: Obama's America," and has written books including "The End of Racism," "Life After Death: The Evidence" and "Obama's America: Unmaking the American Dream."
D'Souza campaigned in 2012 on behalf of Wendy Long, a lawyer and Republican who sought to unseat Democratic incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand as New York's junior senator. Long graduated from Dartmouth College in 1982, a year before D'Souza.
Long could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

Sounds like a trumped up charge to me —
History teaches that under the current ideology of those now in power in this country - genocide is coming. A “political cleansing” if you will that won’t limit itself to just punishment for political beliefs. It will become a genocidal purge.
However, say this, and most Americans today think you are absurd to even warn of such a thing.
But 5 years ago - we were warning them that Conservatives would be targeted for political elimination, and they poo-poohed us then.
Those same folks today will probably tell us that this is not what it looks like.
He’s brilliant—I have many of his books.
I’m mad as hell about this—Benghazi Barry Soebarkah DRIPS in fraud and the blood of innocents.
I’m more and more convinced he (and his handlers) really did plan a **** off the coast of SC.
Revolt is coming.
I had it right to begin with. :-)
He wrote the definitive book on Ronald Reagan.
Touche’!
The seeds have been planted for a second American revolution and they will sprout.
We sure have a lot of bananas.
Payback, whadya think?
I bet a lot of Americans would like to debate Ayers.
I'm here. Sorry I'm late.
A lot of Hillary Clinton contributors got in the same kind of trouble a few years back, as did a major Biden donor. The practice and prosecutions for it seem to be pretty common. Usually it’s some corporate executive who takes a risk illegally reimbursing his employees. D’Souza, a pretty small fish who acted out of idealism, should have steered clear of the practice.
Like the Chris Christie thing? Yep
Yup.
The Communists now control all aspects of the US government.
Mere coincidence, of course. Pure coincidence.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
Revolt has been factored into the ‘Hope and Change’.
Like all Communist revolutions, it requires bloodshed and misery affecting as many people as possible so the people will accept a brutal iron fist from the regime to put down the ‘rebellion’ for the promise of ‘putting bread back on the shelves’.
Revolt has already happened, and nary a shot was fired.
The question will be whether or not this people will be willing to endure defying this regime and it’s power.
Blatantly. The Stasi got D’Souza back for his 2016 documentary.
I doubt it was "trumped up." Blown out of proportion, certainly, but not "trumped up." This type of alleged crime almost necessitates a paper trail - person A gives money to persons B, C, D, E, etc., and those people then give money to campaign X. Each of these transactions leaves a paper trail - there's no way the USAO could have gotten an indictment without showing that paper trail.
This is most certainly a petty, vindictive prosecution, but I wouldn't go so far as to say "trumped up."
