Ziggyworld won’t make $ after the whole concussion lawsuits and rules changes play out-but at least taxpayers will get to pay off the bonding for newest monster truck venue.
I know. They used the same arguments they used with the metrodome. The Metrodome will lead to a renaissance in the neighborhood. Now we find out that in order to get this renaissance we need to tear down the Metrodome and build something 10X as fancy.
“It’ for the (adult) children.”
It’s a PROFITABLE business (the league regularly makes more money than the domestic box office of the ENTIRE movie industry), and in the end that is what they pay CEOs for.
The league office isn’t supposed to make money, the TEAMS make the money, the league office gets money from them for league activity but it’s supposed to come pretty close to breaking even. Even money the league brings in fairly directly (like the TV contracts) gets divied among the teams and technically they pay some back to the league to fund its operations.
The league is a nonprofit, the teams (where the revenue actually happens) are not.
Bread and circuses. Just like in the old Roman Empire.
Everybody’s got an entertainment industry, even dirt poor countries. Which means every place and every time is is “just like the Roman Empire” which shows exactly how useful and interesting the “bread and circuses” declaration is.
