Can a gun protect India's women from rape and violence?
The Guardian ^ | January 19, 2014 | Jon Henley

Named after the 23-year-old who was raped and killed in Delhi in 2012, the Nirbheek pistol has been designed for women. But it has drawn fierce criticism from women's groups and anti-gun campaigners.

The Nirbheek gun designed for women: comes in a bejewelled maroon case.

It weighs barely 500g, is slim enough to slip into a purse, features an attractive darkwood handle on a black titanium-alloy body and comes in a bejewelled maroon case. Engraved on its barrel is the name Nirbheek: Hindi for fearless, and a synonym for Nirbhaya, the name given to the unnamed 23-year-old Delhi woman whose torture, gang rape and, ultimately, death at the hands of six men in December 2012 sparked national and international outrage.

The launch by India's state-run Indian Ordnance Factory of what is billed as the country's first handgun for women, and named after the victim of such a horrific murder, has drawn fierce criticism from women's groups and anti-gun campaigners who say it is an admission of state failure and an insult to Nirbhaya's memory. But Abdul Hameed, the factory owner, told the BBC the gun would increase women's confidence and deter attackers: "We believe that women who carry this gun will feel fearless," he said.

Despite tough new laws against rape, a greater police presence and the launch of dedicated women's helplines in several cities, shocking attacks on women – such as last week's gang rape of a 51-year-old Danish tourist in New Delhi – remain commonplace in India: general violence and homicides using guns may be falling, but levels of reported sexual crimes have increased significantly in recent years. Figures from the National Crime Records Bureau suggest one rape is committed every 22 minutes....

so - instead of getting stoned to death because they got raped, they’ll have their heads cut off for ‘murder” -

Yeah. That’ll solve it

Slap away! ;-)

Even the article points out that guns are tools of the wealthy in India. For this reason, poor women should carry bladed weapons. If they cannot afford a knife, then a sharpened piece of metal or even broken glass.

Just as importantly, they must be willing to use it without hesitation to slash or stab an attacker.

British?

Nah, facing British troops unarmed was relatively safe.

Mr. Nonviolence wanted (non-Indian) people to face NAZI troops unarmed. And preached at them about how much better off they were being slaughtered then to attempt to resist.

Which has nothing to do with Indian women defending themselves from rape.

A Webley is about what I should expect from the same wonderful people who recreated the Enfield motorcycle.

The various spurs, exhaust pipes, antennae, lumps, bumps, and slumps should make this wonderful piece a pure delight to pull outa your sari in a hurry. The front sight alone should occasion many a visit to the trauma center, or dress maker at the very least.

I suggest that the makers of this Webley clone sell it with a webbing belt, canvas holster, Sam Browne Belt, and a lanyard attached to a ring on the butt and looped about the neck. Also, every young lady who goes in harms way should carry at least five of those half-moon loader things, for quicker re-loading in tight situations.

Newsflash, fellow cricketeers: Handgun design has advanced somewhat since 1887 when the Webley was designed. Back to the drawing board. Or maybe a catalog from Biretta, Rossi, Taurus, Glock, or even George Zimmerman's fave, the trusty Keltec!

.22’s often ricochet around inside you if they hit bone. that is where they can do the lethal damage.

I don’t mean to pooh-pooh your effort, but your post, while altogether charming, is completely out of place in a serious ballistic thread.

A .22lr to the upper chest causes a momentary pasue by the target, long enough to make a more precise delivery to the braincase. The .22lr has so little recoil that it is an ideal round for double taps. The .22 magnum is a step up, but it too is very low recoil delivering a 45 grain bullet at more then 1200 fps, for excellent penetration potential.

The Bersa semi in 32acp or .380 is not only inexpensive and reliable, it is very accurate with a fix barrel design. Bersa also makes a .22lr in the same frame which is like a bullet hose.

As long as it has smooth contours that will not snag on the sari gizmos these Indian chiquitas wear, I am all for it.

However, since the Indian weapons chaps seem to be on a British Raj Retro Kick, perhaps they will equip the gals with mini Mills Bombs, mini Stokes Mortars, mini Bren Guns, Mini Martini-Henrys like Winnie has, mini PIATS, and mini-25-pounders.

Ain't gonna be no rapes on this bus!

You like 32? try the 327 Magnum, or the H&R Magnum.

I alternate carry tools between a Taurus 941 snubby, a Bersa 32acp, and a Bersa Thunder 9mm UC Pro. I like all three, but if I get in a fire fight with thuggish types I would prefer the 9mm UC Pro, so I carry an extra two 16 rd mags when I haul it around.
