The destructive and fertile wild hogs that roam the marshes around Back Bay are poised for a bumper year.

Some of their favorite foods are abundant, and the guy with a knack for trapping them has moved to another job.

"I'm sure the pigs did a little dance," said Molly Brown, president of Friends of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

The jig would have been for the departure of David Bishop, an invasive-species biologist who spent the past three years trying to keep in check the state's oldest population of hogs in the refuge and adjoining False Cape State Park.

Sometimes we just need a good wild pig story to break up our routine. Hope you enjoy it. ;-)

Trapping? Just make it open season for hunting them or even put a bounty on them. Not only would it thin the herd but most hunters I know donate the meat they can't eat to charity and homeless shelters. It would be a win-win situation.

Mr. Mercat and I stumbled onto a wonderful heritage park in Ireland which was reverse breading animals to make them like the ones the Irish raised hundreds of years ago. The boars were fascinating. Their babies looked just like adorable little domesticated piglets. But the adults were huge and terrifying. And they are smart, smarter than dogs. This park also had sheep that had been regressed (is that a word?). Instead of shearing, they plucked the wool. Interesting side note - boar meat is not considered to be pork and is therefore a mean that Muslims will eat... I don’t know about Jews.

No harm intended to the article’s author. It’s an informative news item worth passing along.

Trapping?

Once trapped they're usually shot. The trap pens usually get 90+% of the herd at one time if done correctly as opposed to shooting one or two and have the rest escape that much wiser as to avoiding getting shot.

Wild Boar served German Style with a dark sauce is one of my favorites. They should be harvested and used for food - or in care packages to the Palestinians and Iranians.

Indeed, but you (accidentally) claimed credit for authoring it.

People release them into the National Forest here because there is no pig season. You can hunt them anytime.

I would guess you meant "breeding", unless they were about to cook the animals.

I first read the title as “Federal Hogs Running Wild”. The bad part is I wasn’t surprised.

At the hunting club we shoot them. There is no closed season, no limit, and it is good practice. I have killed 100 or more in a single year. What I don’t keep I donate to the people who live nearby.

Texas has an estimated 2-3 million feral hogs. The crop damage from their rooting is incredible. They now have OKed hunting them from helocopters. They make really good sausage if you know a good butcher.
