My relations with my National Post colleague Diane Francis have had their ups and downs over three decades or so. We have gotten over some rough patches, including a period of a couple of years when her chief public conversational gambit seemed to be the moral imperative that I be sent to prison. But we had put that behind us well before I was, in fact, to her apparent regret, actually sent to prison, and our relations have been fine for years.
She is a very nice person and often an interesting business writer. And I have enjoyed reading her recently published book about a federal union between Canada and the United States, Merger of the Century: Why Canada and America Should Become One Country. I dont agree with her conclusion, but neither do I recoil with horror at the idea and tremble with patriotic loathing and snarl annexationist at her as if it were the ultimate condition of moral turpitude.
I was for a time reviled in those terms by some of the traditional, leftist Canadian nationalists, though I was never an annexationist myself. After many years of fighting the very good fight with the Quebec separatists, I made the point that if Quebec prevailed with sovereignty association, and the rest of Canada was sorting out what to do next in national terms, a connection with the United States would be a good deal more appetizing than the fairy tale being peddled to the nationalist voters of Quebec by René Lévesque, Jacques Parizeau, and ultimately Lucien Bouchard: essentially a sovereign Quebec still receiving transfer payments from English Canada and basking in the full faith and credit of the Canadian treasury....

Will we get a discount on Maple Syrup?
Or shale gas and oil?
Combine no. If Canada wants to join the U. S., fine.
We do not want to conflate our Constitution and laws.
Our Constitution remains our founding and governing document.
Our laws remain the laws on the books.
Canada’s provinces merely become states of the United States.
They then conform to the laws and structure our states abide by.
I do't see this happening though, except for an extreme situation like a little ice age making Canada uninhabitable, ar an imperialist China.
We need to remember that in Bush 43’s day there was talk of a “North American Union” of the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Think European Union with national sovereignty being chucked out the window. In the UK right now real conservatives are rallying around UKIP to throw off the chains of the EU.
I even remember a certain presidential candidate in 2012 whose birth name was “Willard” speaking of a “North American” solution to our energy problems.
“I made the point that if Quebec prevailed with sovereignty association, and the rest of Canada was sorting out what to do next in national terms,”
I was in grade school in Vancouver when the 1995 referendum by the Quebecers to secede was made. I actually wanted those a-holes to GTFO out of canada because they’re the biggest whiners in the country.
“Comments? “
Leave Quebec out of the deal, the Frogs can’t be a part of the deal. They’ve been screwing up Canada since it became a country. They are, like all French, insufferable prigs who need to be left in a corner by themselves.
You don’t want the 2 nations to merge as a political entity, you’ll just have 30 million more Democrats. There should be an economic merger, like the EU states. Freer flow of goods and people. You might even see a northward exodus of progressives and socialists who can finally live out their Scandinavian socialist fantasies.
Or move them to Louisiana to be with their cousins?
The liberals would love this. Like annexing Britain or France.
I skied up in Canada a few times. Great fun until some Frogs came along, skiied over our skies, cut in line, and start mayhem. The normal Canucks rolled their eyes and apologized. Alas for the poor frogs, we were from Joisey and gave them an ass whooping. There were no repercussions so I figured the locals were happy we did it. The same week we got into it with a Triad. It was an awesome brawl. Looked like a bad Kung fu movie. Tough little bastards unlike the Frogs. Bouncers broke it up and told us to get out of there because those guys would shoot up our room. Best trip of my life. Then I got married and was put out to pasture. Great memories and when they put me in the ground they will have to pry the grin off my face.
“Or move them to Louisiana to be with their cousins?”
Not the same kettle of fish. I’ve worked with the cajuns in LA, they are good folks who will treat you right and be your friend for life. Been to Quebec City too, no comparison.
That’s more of a hostile takeover with Quisling elements handing us over, like Paul Shamnesty Ryan the bitch boy.
The Cajuns could learn ‘em some manners.
Do they want our President to become their Queen?
He is already Queen of America.
How come we are governed by a conservative administration and you just elected Obama for the second time, perhaps a merger might get America out of it current socialist death spiral.
