I think society thinks it is gross because of the impure thoughts that have been infused into our reality by gays.

I agree. I went to boarding school not all that long ago, and we had communal showers. Nobody thought anything of it, that I can remember.

It wasn't until grad school that I became aware of the postmodern conceit that anything innocent-seeming was just cover for some dirty, perverted reality. "Gay" lit crit seemed to begin the practice of seeing gayness everywhere.
