SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Intel Corp plans to reduce its global workforce of 107,000 by about 5 percent this year as the chipmaker, struggling with falling personal-computer sales, reprioritizes toward faster-growing areas, a company spokesman said on Friday.

The announcement comes a day after Intel posted a fourth-quarter earnings report that did little to dispel concerns about a slowing PC industry.

"This is part of aligning our human resources to meet business needs," spokesman Chris Kraeuter told Reuters on Friday.

I know people in nursing and they are having layoffs. Multiple actually.

Few industries are immune today.

Crappily-written headline seems to imply that Intel is about to kill 5% of the working people on the planet.

Guess they hadn’t heard about the recovery!

It's over there on the horizon. Has been. Year in. Year out.

Health care worker wage concessions and layoffs are already taking place all over the country and will only increase as 0bamacare continues implementation.

They're positioning themselves to take advantage of the future cheap labor pool.

Tech Company Intel 'Strongly Supports' Amnesty

On Thursday, Intel joined a growing list of high-tech and other companies backing amnesty before House Republicans unveil their "immigration principles" document.

"One of the most difficult challenges of immigration reform – and perhaps the key to whether reform is accomplished this year – is how to treat the roughly 11.5 million people currently living in the United States without authorization," Peter Muller wrote on the company's policy blog. "There is general agreement that deporting so many people is the wrong approach, but there is no consensus on what status these unauthorized immigrants should be granted and what path, if any, they should ultimately have toward citizenship."

The ex-Digital Intel fab in Hudson, MA will be closing in a few months with about 700 employees being let go. They will maintain a development group at the site, at least for the time being.

welcome news.
..............
I don’t like Intel and Microsoft as companies.
My suspicion is.
Intel makes a faster CPU.
then their partner, Microsoft, writes code
with more wait statements, that runs slower.
repeat. repeat. repeat.
............
or not.
please enlighten me.

Wait until Obamacare sets how much you make, how many hours you work and where you'll work. This president and the Democrats are out to destroy everyone. Total take over. Trouble is no one believes it will happen to them.

There are few better companies in high tech than Intel.
The whole turn around at Apple beginning in 2002 began because Apple united with Intel and built something new.

The entire high tech world is being turned on its head because consumers want it now and want it cheap.
You can’t make a profit if you are forever pouring $$$ into R&D which is obsolete in 6 months.

Now Microsoft, I’d agree with your assessment.
