You my want to contemplate that a little bit over one hundred years we humans could not even get off the ground, aside of hot air balloons (Mongolfier Brothers) and any one who would have suggested landing a vehicle on Mars, would have been locked up in a “Looney bin”.
A communication device the size of a credit card (Cell Phones) would have been considered a figment of a mentally deranged person. The same goes for the transmission of pictures which not too long ago was considered to be fiction.
Not to mention Voyager 1 which was launched about 36 years ago and now has reached the realms of outer space and one of the most amazing things is that we still manage to communicate with it, with a transit time for the signal by now exceeding 18 hours for one way.
Keep in mind that we already live in the future, except most people do not realize it, and there is little doubt in my mind that not too long ago more than one person may have voiced the same opinion as you “Good grief why spent any kind of money on this junk”
