The elderly man accused of shooting a movie theater patron in Florida after an argument over text messaging told police that he fired because he "was in fear of being attacked."

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said at a news conference today that the victim, Chad Oulson, 43, was texting his young daughter's babysitter when an argument erupted with Reeves over texting during previews before the movie "Lone Survivor."

It’s hysteria to think that because someone shot someone during an argument that he was going to shoot anyone because you looked at him funny.

You would know.

How does what you said explain this from the article:

“Sumter County sheriff’s Cpl. Alan Hamilton was sitting five seats away and grabbed the gun from Reeves, deputies say. The two struggled for control for a few seconds before Reeves let go. The gun was jammed when Hamilton turned it over to deputies.”

Right, it’s a semi auto so it jammed on the reload. My bad. But have you ever known a LEO to only fire once? And he struggled with the arresting deputy.

He’s retired yet brings a loaded pistol into a theater that does not allow firearms? Ergo, he had deadly intent and willfully violated the theater’s rule to facilitate that intent.

IMO he goes off on the first cell phone user he sees and escalates it to the point of exercising his deadly intent. The fact that in a prior incident he was irate and screaming at cell phone users indicates ‘a priori’ motive against theater cell phone texters.

I don’t text btw.

There is no report that he received any medical treatment for thrown popcorn

Ask anyone cop who shot someone for going for their gun or pointing one at them, if they were treated for not being shot? Not relevant

Yes, it does seem the ex-cop was throwing his "authoritah" around, but in the article the OP linked, it seems as though the media is ignoring its usual "cops' authoritah must be respected by the proles!" meme, and going into full blood-dance and ban-guns mode instead.

It must be a terrible dilemma for the media to have to choose between "respect cops' authoritah!" and "CCW's are murderers!". In this case, they kinda have to pick one.

And thanks MrB, my fellow friend of Jack.

You're right, it isn't, but being a rude self absorbed bastard can get you killed.

Being a rude, self absorbed bastard isn't illegal and it isn't a capitol offense.

The word “believe” is cop talk. It means they while they have no first hand knowledge, they believe it to be true (possibly because they have found no evidence or witnesses to the contrary).

Yes or not The timeline here will be interesting -- How long does it take for a retired cop who hasn't pulled his gun in years to pull his weapon, aim and fire??? The patrons describe the popcorn flying almost instantaneous with the gunshot meaning that he may have had the gun out and pointed at the victim before the popcorn flew.

I have not read that but that is a possibility. Just speculating on what the arguments could be, not endorsing them.

Are you ignoring that it might never have happened? Talking to a reported is not sworn testimony. Let’s see what the real testimony is and how it holds up to cross examination.

So you are saying that the shooting in a movie theater by an armed man, disarmed by another ex-cop, of an unarmed man did not happen?

So then they haven’t checked the security camera videotape or don’t intend to.

It’s not real hard to turn a belief into a fact when there is video available.

We paid $200 for a pair of tickets to a sold out concert. Nowhere to move when three self-absorbed social media addicts were seated in front of us. We didn’t pay $200 to stand near the door.

So... you would have been justified in shooting them? If not, you have proved my point.

I won't argue the point on that with you because I also think that him being a retired cop, he will get out of it. The system protects its own. I personally don't like it, but it is what it is.

That being said, I still believe he murdered the guy because the guy had the audacity to not kneel before his perceived [by him] authority. I am not big enough to change anything. But, he knows why he killed him. And so be it. He is not the first one with a badge that willfully murdered someone and he won't be the last.

Being an elder used to mean you behaved with dignity and wisdom.

Respecting an elder does not require kissing his ass or obeying his demands. And said elder looses that respect when he shows he is an ass. We aren’t children, we are adults, and expect to be treated as such.
This ex cop thought his status gave him the power to boss people around. Cops aren’t used to hearing ‘no’ to their commands.

And the noncop work associates are reporting he has anger management issues.

They may have check cam footage, but if it has blind spots that make it possible to exit and enter any of the lobby doors then it’s meaningless.

Their security cams (if any) may be arranged in such a way as to keep an eye on the tills rather than the lobby doors, particularly if they have an attendant checking tickets upon entry.

It’s not like this was rush hour — there were only 25 people in the theatre.

“I would like to know the opinion of the
past character of that shooter from
officers that worked for or with him on the
police department. I am sure that it would
be very interesting.”

They are circling the wagons. Team Blue being Team Blue. How about the opinions of noncops who work with him? They are reporting anger issues.

Some of the smaller pocket guns are so light that don’t have the mass to operate properly unless you grip them tightly.

Its called limp wristing. I have a keltec .32 which jams regularly if I don’t grip it properly. Wikipedia has a good explanation of what happens.
