New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie just endured the worst week of his five years in elected office, battered by a scandal involving traffic jams as political payback and implicating several top and now former aides.
And yet, Christie still holds down the top spot in our rankings of the 2016 Republican field a sign of both the considerable strengths he retains in the race and the lack of an obvious challenger to his dominance.
Make no mistake: Bridge-gate has hurt Christie and slowed, badly, the considerable momentum he built during a sweeping reelection victory in 2013. But, assuming that no other revelations emerge linking him to the closure of several lanes of traffic in Fort Lee, Christie remains the candidate with the possible exception of former Florida governor Jeb Bush who is best positioned to build the coalition of major donors, party activists and GOP elites necessary to win the nomination.

RE: Obama was never vetted like this, and he did many things which were far worse.
How many people died as a result of the traffic jam compared to Benghazi and Fast and Furious?
You know what’s hilarious.
Christie is a backstabber who made friends with the backstabbing democrats and the backstabbing republicans and now, he’s being stabbed in the back.
Live by the knife in the back, die by the knife in the back.
Have fun, Fat Boy, you deserve everything you get, and so do all of your “friends”.
Why not?.. in 2012 ALL conservative candidates were blocked or rejected... in the primary’s.. (for President)
AND a KNOWN democrat collaborator was chosen..
then swallowed the Obama sausage.. or bent over...
Guess who keeps calling, faxing, emailing, and tweeting Rand Paul about gettin together for a friendly chat over herbal tea and submarine sandwiches? “Hey, Rand old buddy, I’m ready to meet with you now! Oh, you’re gonna be busy until 2017? What a shame. Call me if you......hello?
On top? Says who? I am sick of the progressive media picking our candidates.
O'Reilly and Hume are in a dither. They're very upset about this.
A lot more than when Ted was being raked over the coals for his filibuster. Or when Sarah was being attacked by the media.
Imagine that.
They better put some ice on it.
I’d vote for Morris the Cat before I voted for that RINO.
You’re right on all counts.
BOR and Hume are media guys and from the East Coast so they love Christie.
He’s “their guy”.
Thank you so much!!!
He needs to get off then before he crushes them to death.
That says something about GOP candidates... Heck, I think *I* would be a better candidate.
Yeah. The Dems wish.
Of course he’d throw in some unacceptable candidates. Rubio went native before he had a year in office (and I look forward to seeing Allen West beat him in ‘16) and Kasich has been thoroughly subpar as Ohio Governor (and in a worse political climate, would likely be a one-termer this year).
Rand Paul is an Amnesty pusher like Rubio.
Christie is not NEXT.
Next is Geb Bush, Romney, Ryan or Santorum.
As representative of GOPe, I know us. We will pick someone who is next as in next Bush, next run (romney), next in line (vp candidate) or 2nd in 2012 primaries (santorum).
I heard somebody on the radio today talking about “front runners at this point in the race” going back decades. In neither party do they get the nod. It was interesting, really, to think how we never had Presidents Humphrey, Giuliani; H. Clinton and yet somehow we ended up with Presidents Nixon, Obama, B. Clinton.
Agreed it’s too early to make a call, on either side (I don’t think HRC gets the free ride she seems to think she deserves, either).
Assuming he can beat Crist in November, not sure why FL Governor Rick Scott isn’t mentioned—more relevant in all but name than Jeb, hasn’t made the lapses in judgment Rubio has. Yeah, I’m in Orlando so biased I guess, but the two-term GOP governor of the third largest state, who has never lost a race, seems like a fairly obvious contender.
