There was a pair of male penguins that were proclaimed as "gay". That lasted until they introduced a female into the mix. Suddenly the "gay" males turned very hetro.
They were programed to make a nest and await a mate. When there are no other penguins around they don't. When there is another they do because where there is one that means there are girls around.
