OTTAWA Prime Minister Stephen Harper paid tribute Saturday to Ariel Sharon, describing the late Israeli leader as an architect of the Middle East nation he once staunchly defended.
Harper, whose government has been a steadfast ally of Israel, quickly released a statement upon learning of the death of Sharon.
On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and to the Israeli people, he said.
Harper praised Sharon for both aspects of his career in Israel first as a general, and later as a politician.
A renowned military leader, Mr. Sharon pursued the security of Israel with unyielding determination that was recognized by friends and foes alike.
Harper also said that Sharon played a central role in the Israeli government for several years, changing the political landscape through his leadership and vision.
We join today with those mourning the loss of Ariel Sharon, one of the architects of modern day Israel and one of the nations staunchest defenders.

Israel has at least one friend in the west.
Surprisingly, Jewish voters in Canada do not recognize this. Unsurprisingly, Harper is not doing it to garner votes, he is doing it because it is the right thing to do. Israel is a natural ally in the middle east.
