I was browsing through photos of Chaplains serving at Iwo Jima when I came upon this link:

"The Sermon on Iwo Jima"

The lesson of this vignette resonates strongly with me. In my experience, there is no prejudice in foxholes.

The refusal of some to allow the Jewish Chaplain to pray the Invocation at a unified Memorial Service resulted in the Jewish Chaplain's message resounding to a vastly greater degree than it would have had they not objected.

"Dia shábháil ar fad anseo!"

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Very powerful eulogy by Rabbi Gittelsohn!!

Thanks, too, to the three Protestant chaplains....they did the right thing. I hope the complaining chaplains were shamed.

“Among Gittelsohn’s listeners were three Protestant chaplains so incensed by the prejudice voiced by their colleagues that they boycotted their own service to attend Gittelsohn’s. One of them borrowed the manuscript and, unknown to Gittelsohn, circulated several thousand copies to his regiment. Some Marines enclosed the copies in letters to their families.”
