Duckhorn Wine Company has a history of going after wineries that dare to use a duck in their names or labels.
But this time, the winery is hunting a potentially tougher target: the self-professed redneck royalty of the hit A&E TV show Duck Dynasty.
The Napa Valley winery is going after the Duck Dynasty folks because theyve used the word Duck and an image of a duck on their wines.
Thats right: the reality TV stars with the motto Faith, Family and Facial Hair who made their fortune selling duck hunting gear have launched a wine brand, called Duck Commander.
In November, the Robertson family of Duck Dynasty fame collaborated with Trinchero Family Estates to produce three wines from California grapes: Triple Threat red blend, Wood Duck chardonnay and Miss Priss pink moscato.

Several years ago I was given several bottles of Duckhorn wine ... wasn’t impressed.
You can copyright a duck? That ought to be a surprise to God.
Shall they next sue the makers of Cold Duck?
Nothing more than an attempt at extortion. quack quack.
This sounds like a legal team on autopilot here. Well there are some shot guns aimed at them they can’t fend off this time.
Seems everybody is out to make a buck on the back of the Duck Dynasty franchise now that it is popular.
This is one of the more pathetic ones. Anything generically redneck would be a good seller on the back of this craze.
By carefully examining the images of ducks on the two bottles shown in the article, It appears that Duck Commander is coming in for a perfect landing, and Duckhorn is barely swimming, or maybe Duckhorn is just a sitting duck ?
I’m confident that the Duck Commander trademark will prevail.
Agreed, this is a rather pathetic action on the part of a winemaker in need a PR team with a functioning brain cell.
Reminds me of when Spike Lee tried to sue Spike TV. Like Spike Lee was the only Spike that ever was.
Duckhorn’s trying to buy some brand loyalty among the sodomite community.
Like if Duckhorn came up with a variety they called Duckhorn Redneck.
The suit is without merit. No one would confuse Duckhorn wine with a Duck Dynasty product.
I wish them a lot of duck.
A few years ago Starbuck’s - claiming a copyright violation - sued a tiny Greek Orthodox monastery for selling a “Christmas blend” coffee. Yes, Starbucks actually thought “Christmas blend” was something they could have proprietary rights to. They lost, and looked like silly, small-minded men in the process.
Could be an interesting follow the money story.......Just saying.
Sewers of suing, as it were.
No, you can’t copyright a duck... but you could trademark a specific duck.
Daffy Duck, Donald Duck, Oregon Ducks, Duck Commander.
I can understand Duckhorn’s worry about being overshadowed by a more famous and popular Duck, but they can’t own the exclusive use of the word.
