New details have come to light in this weekend's deadly officer-involved shooting outside a Yakima car wash.
YPD said the officer shot and killed Rocendo Arias because he saw him holding a gun in his car. Arias took a bullet to the head.
Investigators said Yakima Police Officer Casey Gilette saw a suspicious car parked at a car wash. After noticing it hadn't moved for an hour, YPD said Gilette approached Rocendo Arias's car. First on the driver's side, then the passenger's side and opened the door. The officer told investigators he saw Arias holding a gun.
"It appeared that he had some accessories to the handgun that he was trying to install on it or put pieces of this gun together," said Yakima police Captain Rod Light.
Gilette shot four times, hitting Arias once in the head. YPD Spokesperson Rod Light maintains the officer had reason to react.
"The deceased had the weapon not only in his hand, but he also had his finger on the trigger," said Light.
However, investigators learned that Arias' weapon wasn't a typical gun. It was an Airsoft gun, considered a replica that shoots plastic pellets. While these guns can fire at high velocity, they're not designed to be lethal. YPD said it's not clear if Arias pointed the gun at Gilette before the shooting...

I guess it is possible that he didnt know it was a cop who jerked his door open
Then he might have pointed his plastic toy hoping to ward off the robber or car jacker.\
So if you see a guy with a gun the first thing you do is approach him assuming he’s just taking a break from his rampage? Sheesh its amazing the cops don’t all shoot each other at shift change as panicky as they are.
There were no police as we understand them for quite a while after the Founding.
0300 hrs. Parked next to a car wash for an hour. I wasn’t there.
[ What if the guy in the vehicle was an off duty cop or even an undercover one.
If you see someone with a gun you just shoot them. Sounds like second degree murder to me. ]
That is a very damn good point...
Also what if it was a private security officer that was responding to page from a faulty alarm system, he gets done responding to it and goes back to his car and notices that his gun took some damage when he dropped it trying to fix the disabled alarm, he is in his car with his gun messing with it then all of a sudden... blam blam blam blam... he is dead....
And the worst that will happen to this cop is he might get fired. Even that is unlikely.
[ They havent interviewed the officer yet and they dont want to speculate, but he can state categorically that the victim had his finger on the trigger. Nice job of positively knowing what you dont positively know Chief. ]
[They do look like the real thing from any distance but they also have a blaze orange ring around the muzzle which is very hard to not see.]
The cop could see the finger on the trigger... but not the orange ring....
I did not assume anything. I mentioned several possible scenarios, none of which were stated as anything but a possibility.
You or someone else flat out stated that he pointed the gun at the cop with his finger on the trigger. Since the cop is the only living witness to the exact chain of events, then he can literally say anything he wants.
Yes cops lie. I have seen them lie through their teeth.
They're trained to confront at all costs, like a pack of hounds on a coon.
They need to inject a little common sense and thought into their activities.
As my posting history will show, I have no love for the transformation of police and sheriff’s departments into ‘law enforcers ‘ who are armed hall monitors. However, your remarks are correct. Point something that looks like a real firearm at a Leo and a deadly response can be expected. Yakima is overrun with damp Americans, um, er, undocumented Americans or ‘economic refugees’ and as a result swarms with Latino thugs and gang members. I can understand why the LEO did what he did. In passing, I wonder what the ‘emigration status’ of the decent was?
Bobby 223 is with us. It is Alaska Wolf that leads or led the cops can do no wrong club, a/k/a jackboot lickers, a/k/a badge lickers.
Maybe he had a glow-in-the-dark orange finger? But we don't know since the officer hasn't been interviewed yet.
And Police Captain Rod Light doesn't know, even though he knows...

From the article:
“Instead of knocking on Arias window to further investigate the situation, Light admits the officer swung the passenger side door open without informing the driver. After noticing the disassembled gun, Gilette fired four shots, striking Arias once in the head.”
What the Hell......
No cop should be able to do this and not expect someone to involuntarily react in a way that may no be the best way....
I guess the “Policia Los Mexicanos” are too damned used to doing no knock raids, why not a no nock raid on a car.....
The "training" didn't take. Four shots, and only one connected. In the head.
Not "center mass", last time I checked...
Nonsense.
Those toy guns have a very visible bright orange ring on the muzzle end. They are not only easy to see, they are hard not to see. That is why they use bright orange and put it on the muzzle.
They do that so cops won’t just shoot you if you have one.

Did he see the gun before or after he forced himself into the victim's car?
This is starting to seem like a No-Knock Conditioning taking effect...
He saw a disassembled gun and started shooting. A disassembled gun .
As in a gun that was disassembled, in pieces, and therefore not able to fire.
I live in an open-carry state, and yet I think you might be right.
By what right did the officer open the car door — just because the person inside had a gun???
What’s to say that he didn’t have a permit for that gun and thus the right to have it in his hands???
Ohh wait a minute — it was just a toy — thus he was within his rights to have it in his hands.
Maybe Quick Draw should go hang around down at ToyzRUs and then ye could really get his numbers up.
