Timed for the biggest gathering of screens desktop, laptop, tablet, TV, phone on the planet, a new survey finds 70 percent of users of those screens report some level of eye discomfort dubbed digital eye strain.
Symptoms included dry eyes, blurry vision, fatigue and neck and shoulder cramping. The survey released Thursday by the Vision Council, a trade group for makers of eye care products, warned of serious long-term eye risk, including macular degeneration and cataracts.

The bright white on web pages causes me to get a mild form of snow blindness. I have changed the default bright white background to a shade of gray and it has helped quite a bit.
Using Firefox select tools in the top menu list then in the drop down select Options. In the pop up window select Content then select colors. In the new window select background and change the color to what is comfortable to your eyes. It is basically the same using IE.

I work for a large corporation that does their best to minimize ergonomic problems. I was having dry eye/eye strain issues, and they sent an ergonomist up to my office for an evaluation.
Turns out my problem was caused by staring intently at columns of numbers on my computer screen all day. It seems many people will have a tendency to not blink as often as they need to when doing that kind of work.
Just being made aware of that fact (along with some eyedrops) allowed me to fix the problem.
