Ankara demanded allowance for uranium enrichment and plutonium extraction in a nuclear export deal inked with Tokyo, a Japanese daily quoted as a Japanese Foreign Ministry official as saying.

A clause, which was added in the nuclear agreement signed by the two nations, upon Turkey’s demand prompted concerns over a possible proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The clause at issue allows Turkey to enrich uranium and extract plutonium, potentially creating nuclear material for weapons, Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun reported on Jan. 8.

A senior Japanese Foreign Ministry official claimed the clause was added at the request of Turkey, the daily also reported.

A joint venture involving Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has won an order to construct Turkey’s second nuclear plant in the Black Sea province of Sinop.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who was in Japan since Jan. 5, and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, had signed a $22 billion deal on the nuclear plant project.

Safety issues

The pact paves the way for exporting Japan’s enrichment and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing technologies and is expected to be discussed at the Japanese Parliament soon before voting on its approval.

The deal was on the agenda during a meeting between the Turkish and Japanese prime ministers on Jan. 7 in Tokyo, as they have agreed to accelerate the process.

Washington...we have a problem. This is a serious problem considering the current events in Turkey and the allegations of secret deals and shipments to Iran.

This cannot be allowed.

I guess I am behind the curve on this one. Hadn't heard, nor had I suspected, allegations that Turkey was cozy w/ Iran, esp. re nuclear materials. Wow. It's time for the pretense of NATO membership to come to a screeching halt, if so; and maybe it should end anyway. Turkey is making some changes that would have been unthinkable just a decade ago.

question is why does Turkey want Uranium enrichment.....and it would be the perfect backdoor for Iran to get it.

for a few years there at least, Turkey looked like it was overcoming the savagery and insanity of the Islamic world.

Since it has shown recent signs of reverting back to the 7th century, it will be very much best to prevent it from getting nuclear weapons now

(it also does not belong in NATO now, either, that’s pretty clear)

Turkey’s demand

"Demanding" is what Turks excell at (and little else besides). Visit Europe sometime...

Little TurkoHitler Erdogan would just love to have have his very own TurkoNuke...to proliferate to his islamist brethren, of course.

Turkey needs to be kicked out of NATO and back to the 7th century where it belongs, and feels comfortable at.

It’s interesting how the nations are aligning themselves isn’t it?

The Japanese are thinking that its a multipolar world now that the US has decided to revert back to adolescence.

Who gives a toss about what we think about anything any more? Like we’d back any of our allies? Who haven’t we screwed in the last five years?

This is a country that weight-tests new equipment in its main shipyard in Istanbul with people, vice bags of sand or cement blocks like the rest of the world. In Ankara in 2008, when their reservoirs ran dry, they diverted the ‘Red River’ to people’s taps. This was the same water they wouldn’t allow for irrigation of crops due to dangerously high arsenic levels, but it came flowing out of faucets in millions of apartments. Given their track record, they should do really well with anything nuclear.
