Fort Pierce Police Department unveils new armored vehicle

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Police in Fort Pierce are now armed with a U.S. military surplus battle wagon: a six wheel, 30-ton armored vehicle worth $700,000 — that the agency got for $2,000.

“If you see my SWAT team roll up in this, it’s over, so just give up,” said Police Chief Sam Baldwin.

However Baldwin hopes the mine-resistant, ambush protection vehicle just stays parked. If used, it would be for transporting the SWAT team and for a mobile command and rescue vehicle.

Officer Keith Holmes got the vehicle in October through the auspices of the National Defense Authorization Act. That allows the military to transfer excess military vehicles to law enforcement agencies. The city got a little-used model with 5,000 miles on it.

“If you see my SWAT team roll up in this, it’s over, so just give up,” said Police Chief Sam Baldwin.

Remind me not to retire to Fort Pierce. I want to live through my retirement, not have the Police Farce end it.

Police and fire departments, etc., have had first dibs on military surplus equipment since the end of WWII and maybe before.

Boy scouts, Civil Air Patrol, ROTC and many other organizations, ditto.

What's left now shows up on govliquidation.com, where you and I can bid on it.

I have several trailers I bought from a surplus outlet, kublos.com who buys lots from the Gov. that way.

I could do it myself, but not having the time, I pay them a premium to do it for me.

I also have a German army Unimog and a Belgian army Land Rover Airportable.

More of this stuff is showing up in police departments now, simply because it exists, and with the internet they can find out about what's available.

The general idea for either fire, police, etc., and civilians is to bid around scrap price.

That way if it turns out to be a lemon, you can recover your money by cutting it up for scrap.

Where the heck are these rear ends going to deploy this vehicle in Fort Pierce

That was not part of the decision making process. It was FREE, well almost.

Fort Pierce is not every going to turn down a chance for Federal largess. Look at the travesty of those barriers in the lagoon down by the marina.

The police department will find an excuse to use the vehicle. Not sure if people still refer to certain parts of Fort Pierce as “Little Vietnam” but even back when they did you never heard of swat team rolling in to keep order.

Fort Pierce is a craphole, majority black with a large Haitian and Latin American community.
Drugs are rampant and killings are nothing unusual.
Do they need a vehicle like this? Hell no.

In military intelligence you always had a thermite grenade for every safe or storage locker that held any type of classified material. Do the Marines & Navy do the same?

I have another stupid question about this. What is the MPG of this vehicle? I thought the government was going eco-friendly. This vehicle does not seem to match such a description.

However Baldwin hopes the mine-resistant, ambush protection vehicle just stays parked.

Baldwin is a liar. He is practically salivating at the idea of being able to use this against the criminal scum (read: citizens) in his jurisdiction.
