Is there any legal recourse when a news outlet willfully lies about natural phenomenon where there is no clearly defined plaintiff?

If you can prove that they were incorrect and that you suffered damages (emotional distress) and/or losses (couldn’t hold your job due to the emotional distress), then yes... you have a case to sue them.
