German Chancellor Angela Merkel has fractured a bone in her pelvis in a cross-country skiing accident in Switzerland, her spokesman says.
She will have to remain lying down as much as possible in the next three weeks and several visits will be cancelled, Steffen Seibert said.
She also suffered heavy bruising in the accident, in the alpine Engadine region of eastern Switzerland.
Ms Merkel was not skiing fast at the time, the spokesman added.
He called the injury "severe bruising linked with a partial fracture on the left, rear part of the pelvis".
Immediately after the accident, during the Christmas...
Ms Merkel still intends to chair a cabinet meeting on Wednesday - the first gathering of all her coalition ministers. She is now walking with the aid of crutches.
But mostly she will be working from home. She has cancelled a trip to Poland this week and will not receive Luxembourg's new prime minister Xavier Bettel in Berlin, the spokesman said.

Ich bin ein Bumlegger
PELVIS has left the building!
You may not know this, but cross-country skiing is far more typically done on trails rather than wide open slopes. You're really locked into a track, or cutting one.
Ouch! Well, at least she can get around.
Sorry to hear this. fractured pelvis is a serious injury — and can be permanently debilitating for an older person.
.
On a more serious note, best wishes to Ms. Merkel for a swift and speedy recovery.
Old age does not always mean a person has common sense.
Fractured pelvis .... this reminds me of the time I went skiing and broke my ass.
I used to be a very good skier and would ski really serious terrain--steep deep powder in the aspens, jumping off cliffs, ridiculous bumps, etc. I was never hurt doing that stuff. (Yes, stupid, but I gave it up after my second baby.) But I was badly hurt on the baby slopes: going in and out of the gondola building, helping my kid ski into a restaurants, and so forth, when out-of-control bunnies smashed into me. It really is usually when you're going slowly and there are skiers of very different skill levels merging, as near restaurants or trail crossings, that you have many accidents. When we went skiing as a family we took our children into the forests to avoid other skiers.
One Freeper is a ski patrolman, so perhaps he can confirm what I say.
Sadly, I do. She was in my top five list of most beautiful actresses.
“I thought weebles only wobbled.” Then they fall down.
First Schumacher and now Merkel? Interesting...
Why oh why didn’t the NSA watchdog assigned to Merkel warn her?
No wonder she wrecked, the center of gravity is too high, LOL
they padded her fall
Maybe W will fly over there and give her a nice therapeutic massage.
