Not everything you learn in college comes in the classroom. Too bad he already graduated. Which leads to a question; why would a college grad take an intern position in the first place? Sounds like something a student would be doing as part of their course load.

Drum took the aide position after completing Colorado State University's capitol internship program, a class designed to teach students about the legislative process.

Drum was not an intern. The intern program was a part of his undergraduate program. When he graduated, he was hired as an aide. That's why students sign up for intern programs. The article makes it quite clear.
