GLAAD needs a makeover. Their Queer Eye for Straight Guy Phil Robertson blew up in their face. Just ask A&E. Not since the young Vito Corleone persuaded landlord Signor Robertos to walkback his decision to evict the poor widow and her dog (and the dog stays, right?) has a business decision been reversed as abruptly, awkwardly or hilariously. We can only wonder what Phil Robertsons version of and the dog stays, right? sounded like to the hat-holding and stuttering A&E executives.
Who put a book by that filthy f*ggot on my shelf! snarled Che Guevara (subject of a History Channel glorification) upon noticing a book on the shelf of the Cuban embassy in Algiers in December 1964. The disgusted Che yanked out the book by Virgilio Pinera and slammed it against the wall, while snarling more insults of the sort Phil Robertson politely eschewed in his GQ interview.
Pinera was an internationally-famous gay poet who had somehow prospered in fascist, racist, classist, macho-ist, etc. etc. etc. Cuba before its liberation and progressive enlightenment by the Castro brothers and Che Guevara as hailed by the worlds progressives practically en masse.
A year after Che Guevaras tantrum against filthy f*ggots! the regime he co-founded began herding tens of thousands of Cuban men and boys into forced labor camps for the crime of fluttering their eyelashes, flapping their hands, wearing tight pants, talking with a lisp, listening to rock music, etc. Indeed, the regime hailed by rockers from Carlos Santana to Bonnie Raitt, from Stephen Stills to Chrissie Hynde and from Jackson Browne to Jimmy Buffet coined a new term for criminal activity within its Stalinist realm: Elvispresleyism.
Tens of thousands of Cuban youths were jailed and tortured for nothing worse than long hair, tight pants and fondness for Yankee-imperialist Rock & Roll. Any gay mannerisms made their punishment all the worse. Those Hollywood stereotypes of bigotry and brutality by backwoods American bigots against long-haired queers! Dirty hippies! etc. were indulged 90 miles from U.S. shores by the very heroes of those hippies: Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. The type of violent bigots demonized in Easy Rider, Alices Restaurant, Gimme Shelter, Joe, etc. were ruling Cuba with the very brutality that characterize American hippies worst nightmareswhile being idolized by American hippies!
Naturally, youd never get an inkling of this rollicking irony from A&Es lengthy Biography programs (i. e. glorifications) of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. Your professor probably never mentioned it either. Well, its all fully documented here.
"Work Will Make Men Out of You" read the sign at the Castroite prison-camps gate, right over the barbed wire and next to the machine gunners posted on the watchtowers. The initials for these camps were UMAP, not GULAG, but the conditions were quite similar.
Nothing remotely of this sort had ever been attempted by any regime in the Western hemisphere, even by any of the major villains who give liberals such recurring fits of the vapors: Pinochet, Somoza, Trujillo, Batista, etc.
Heres an idea, GLAAD: why not get on A&E for this insensitivity not just against gays but against most of your co-citizens? Heres a few Che Guevara-isms overlooked by A&Es programs:
* "Against those hyenas [Americans] there is no option but extermination!"
* "We must keep our hatred [against the U.S.] alive and fan it to paroxysm!"
* "If the nuclear missiles had remained [in Cuba] we would have fired them against the heart of the U.S. including New York City. The victory of socialism is well worth millions of atomic victims!"
After all, some major outreach and fence-mending with flyover-America seems in order for you folks at GLAAD about now. Why not go after Ches hagiographers at A&E?
Ernesto Che Guevara was second in command, chief executioner, and chief KGB liaison for a regime that outlawed elections and private property. This regimes KGB-supervised police employing the midnight knock and the dawn raid among other devices rounded up and jailed more political prisoners as a percentage of population than Stalins and executed more people (out of a population of 6.4 million) in its first three years in power than Hitlers executed (out of a population of 70 million) in its first six.
A&E, basing their Che Guevara Biography on a book written in collaboration with the Castro regime, gushed that: Che Guevaras idealism will rarely be equaled.
During a 1961 speech in Cuba, Che Guevara denounced the very spirit of rebellion as reprehensible. Earlier he had cheered the Soviet invasion of Hungary and the concurrent slaughter of thousands of Hungarians who resisted Russian imperialism. In collaboration with Soviet officers Che Guevara helped crush a rural rebellion in Cuba itself that raged from 1960-66. Thousands of Cuban country folk were murdered in the process.
Nonetheless the A&E Biography gushed that: Che Guevara is a potent symbol of rebellion, liberation and resistance to imperialism
Wilson Cruz was the GLAAD spokesperson who tattled on Phil Robertson to A&E executives: Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phils lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe. Phils decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families.
Before joining GLAAD Cruz worked for The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force. This same NGLTF honored Raul Castros daughter Mariela at the New York Public Library in May 2012 with a forum to spout her regime's anti-American propaganda. Needless to add, Raul Castro's daughter--an official of the only regime in the history of the Western hemisphere to herd gay men and boys at Soviet bayonet-point into forced labor camps and torture chambers--received a standing ovation at the event sponsored by this gay rights organization.
In brief, according to Wilson Cruz, Phil Robertson simply cannot be allowed to express his views (which happen to coincide with a majority of Americans') in a free-market venue. This amounts to "pushing lies." But Mariela Castro must be allowed to spew Stalinist propaganda at New York taxpayer's expense. Apparently this amounts to spreading the enlightenment as reckoned by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
Any questions why so many flyover Americans question the agenda of outfits like GLAAD and The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force?
They are both disposed of the minute their usefulness ends.
And neither ever see it coming.
But, but .... Stonewall or something...
Maybe Phil needs to suspend A&E?
There’s great info in that piece, but it should be entirely re-written. It’s just a mish-mosh.
Great article. Here we have a real homophobe in Che Guevara, a murdering thug who is celebrated by the American left. Go figure.
Agreed. What a messy piece of writing. Editor still on vacation?
If you’re “down for the cause”, whatever that means, you can do no wrong. If you’re not, then you can do no right.
Before we pop the champaign, we need to wait on the ratings for the new season of Duck Dynasty. It they have 13 million viewers then everything is perfect. However, if they only get around 8 million then Duck Dynasty Fever is over. It was bound to happen anyway at some point. It is VERY difficult to maintain popularity with a fickle America.
Glorify fudge packers instead?
I am waiting for A&E to do an expose on the ACLU, or Planned Parenthood, or the NAACP, but I fear I have a long wait.
So it’s not just me; I thought maybe early dementia was setting in. I gave up on it half way through.
My enemy isn’t a person. My fight is with the devil. I’m understanding that more and more.
Kim says dogs hungry send in GLAAD.
Thank-you for writing this. It gives me a lot to think about and tell stupid young people who idolize Che in their shirts and posters.
I have never watched the show, but I have enjoyed seeing their wares where I shop in hunting stores and Walmart. The other day I was very close to buying a pair of camos just because of their wardrobe influence. (Silly, I know, but I love fashion.)
As soon as the blow-up happened, I began watching their shows, which conveniently was on non-stop the weekend after Christmas. My husband admonished me, because I watched them in real-time and therefore helped A& E with their revenue. I could not help myself having them on while I cooked dinner or exercised.
Lord, I love their show now. I DVR it, and then I put it on before I go to sleep. It just puts me in a good mood. I am watching previous episodes of The Walking Dead because a Freeper recommended it as a way to dramatize survival scenarios, so if I didn’t watch Duck Dynasty, I would probably not be able to sleep or have nightmares.
So count me in as one of their newer viewers that will put them on my record list. I think there will be others like me and their popularity will soar in the new season.
I hope so and so glad that you enjoy the show. I do too. I purchased the seasons on Amazon Instant Video and watch them. I purchased the first 3 seasons for my brother in law along with a couple of duck dynasty items. He enjoyed them. I hope you buy the camps. Why not? Enjoy them.
Thank-you for responding. That gives me an idea. I will be visiting my family at the end of the month and I will introduce them to it to the show.
I am having fun thinking of Duck Dynasty promotional items, I would be interested in buying based on their Hawaiian vacation, e.g. Phil’s Hawaiian massage butter; a camo sarong; a duck motif Segway helmet; tropical drink embellishments shaped like a duck blind; I could go on.
And thanks for the encouragement to enjoy their clothing wares. Camos to be made into cut-offs, here I come.
anything with Duck Dynasty logo or name goes to A & E. They have the advertising rights to that name...if you want your money to go to the Robertsons, you need to buy directly from them and not A & E advertising rights in the contact.
