PORTLAND, Ore. (CBS Seattle/AP) One Oregon mother says that she is unable to afford health insurance for her and her 18-month-old son because its too expensive.
The woman who wishes to remain anonymous tells KOIN-TV that she originally championed President Barack Obamas signature health care law because she thought it would help people in her situation.
Ive been a cheerleader for the Affordable Care Act since I heard about it and I assumed that it was designed for people in my situation, she told KOIN. I was planning on using the Affordable Care Act and I had done the online calculator in advance to make sure I was going to be able to afford it.
Her husband works for a non-profit organization that pays for his health care, but the couple is unable to afford to have her and their son covered under his plan. And shes been told their combined income is too much to qualify for a subsidized health care plan under Cover Oregon.
It wasnt until I started the process and got an agent that I started hearing from them I wasnt going to qualify for subsidies because I qualify on my husbands insurance, she told KOIN.

If my understanding of the married coverage gap is correct, the statement about making too much money to get subsidies under Cover Oregon is incorrect. The reality is that if her husband has coverage and it is deemed affordable (single coverage usually is) then the wife and child don't qualify for any subsidies.
Cue Nancy Pelosi, please.
Many companies that pay a majority of employee health premiums allow the purchase of family coverage, but the entire cost of that premium is born by the employee. With the new health regulations in effect that can be a lot of money.
Would love to know what non-profit he works for....
“she originally championed President Barack Obamas signature health care law”.....
Her reasons matter not, no sympathy from me...she is getting exactly what she “Championed” for...willingly snowballed by Obama.
We warned these idiots...they will never take the time to be informed....ever! They can read it and weep hard for all I care. They cut their own throats as I see it. Elections have consequences and so doesn’t that which one supports!
Fooled ya, didn't I?
Wasn’t it P J O’Rourke that said “IF you think health care is expensive now, just wait until it is FREE”...
Chris Plante (WMAL DC AM630) said this morning that if the plan has to cover pre-existing conditions, just wait till the patient gets the diagnosis then get insurance for it. Naturally that is ‘tongue in cheek’ but his topic for the day was asking his mostly Conservative Audience “What has Obama care done good for me”.
He also predicted that the 20 something crowd (Who when it comes to insurance (unless mommy and daddy paying for it)are just as bullet proof as we thought we were) are probably going to lean Libertarian and distance themselves from both ‘major’ parties that are shoving this ‘making a car payment without having a car’ trash down their throats.
People like her are exactly what has been wrong with health system and the country in general. It’s not that she didn’t have access to health insurance. It’s that their priority wasn’t to pay for her or her son. Husband gets his paid for, but they don’t want to cough up their own money to buy in for the other family members. She was all for Obamacare because she expected OTHER TAXPAYERS and Insureds to cover her costs.
Just a moocher with the wrong priorities. Bet they have money for other “necessities”. Glad she got what she deserved. But I feel sorry for the rest of us.
looks like they have the comment section disabled.
Wonder why?
:p
Sweetheart, your combined income is greater than 4 times the poverty level: you’re rich. Welcome to the 1% or whatever. While you were looking up at those above thinking how great it will be to get your hands on their money, you neglected to look down and see just how many folks were looking at YOU and yours.
Oh, dagnabit, I just got my Give-A-Darn app fixed and you went and broke it again.
Why would she not be covered under her husband’s plan? My husband and I - before the Obama economy - always had jobs that covered the entire family. I’m quite naïve about this, it seems!
What is that line? Pay back is a bitch, isn’t it?
this is what selfish, self centered, self-serving laws bring upon people.
Not all employers are like that. Many employers will cover the employee, paying that large portion of the employees premium, but coverage for children and spouse shift a larger portion of the premium onto the employee. Sometimes the employee is responsible for the entirety of dependent premiums.
This is where the problem crops up in Obamacare. During the last year qualifications to receive subsidized premiums were interpreted to mean that if the employee of a company received "affordable" (less than 9.5% of total wages) insurance then the spouse and children would not receive a subsidy.
For example, Matt and Leanne and their child are a young couple. Matt works for an employer that provides single coverage for $150 a month and the employer pays the rest. For Matt to buy coverage for his wife and kid would cost and extra $600 a month because the company doesn't pay any of the premium. They still receive the benefit of group coverage and protection from pre-existing conditions even before the ACA showed up. This $600 a month is a lot because Matt is a machinist and only make $40k a year.
Here is the problem with the ACA. If Matt wasn't covered by his employer, the employer would eventually have to pay a $2000 penalty per year, Matt would go on the exchange and probably receive subsidized insurance for his whole family for around $350 a month. Because he receives "affordable" care for himself, he is supposed to buy that and his wife and kid don't get subsidized coverage on the exchange. Instead they have to buy a bronze plan for $450 a month that has a $12,500 out of pocket cap. Now Matt and Leanne are paying a total of $600 month in premiums plus they have two separate deductibles to meet with one of them being 30% of their annual wages.
I am quite fortunate. My employer pays for my insurance and the coverage for my wife is $72 every 2 weeks and that includes vision and dental.
Aaaaargh! I’ve read your post (thanks so much!!) twice now and am trying to digest it. No wonder most Americans are totally lost in this sorry, sorry story. Unlike many here, I have some sympathy for people lost in this morass.
Again, thank you for taking the time. I’m gonna have my husband explain it in the morning, lol!
“You wanted it, (so) you got it.”
What we have here is...failure to c’municate.
Exactly.
While I don’t like the idea of her son having been affected, I do find quite satisfying the tribulations faced by liberal backers of a horrid legislation they were oh-so-sure would benefit them without consequence.
I do find it rather odd her husband refuses to include his family on his medical policy, the costs notwithstanding. She can simply apply some of the under-the-table proceeds from her yoga classes to help defray costs.
She and hubby helped put us all into this f***ing mess... they should at least embrace the suck on their part.
No, she selfishly voted herself what she thought was Free Stuff.
As did many Democrats. The Woman (D)vote is the most stubborn because
they'll refuse to listen to any facts or reason.
