Hospital staff in Northern Virginia are turning away sick people on a frigid Thursday morning because they can't determine whether their Obamacare insurance plans are in effect.
Patients in a close-in DC suburb who think they've signed up for new insurance plans are struggling to show their December enrollments are in force, and health care administrators aren't taking their word for it.
In place of quick service and painless billing, these Virginians are now facing the threat of sticker-shock that comes with bills they can't afford.
'They had no idea if my insurance was active or not!' a coughing Maria Galvez told MailOnline outside the Inova Healthplex facility in the town of Springfield.
She was leaving the building without getting a needed chest x-ray.
'The people in there told me that since I didn't have an insurance card, I would be billed for the whole cost of the x-ray,' Galvez said, her young daughter in tow. 'It's not fair you know, I signed up last week like I was supposed to.'
The x-ray's cost, she was told, would likely be more than $500.
Galvez said she enrolled in a Carefirst Blue Cross bronze plan at a cost of about $450 per month through healthcare.gov, three days before Christmas.
'No one has sent me a bill,' she said.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius testified in a December 11 congressional hearing that the federal government can't say how many new enrollees have written checks for their first month's premiums.
'Some may have paid, some may have not,' she conceded.
It's unlikely that a valid insurance card would have changed Galvez' fortunes, however.

Yes. I feel their pain and it feels great!
it isnot a full 100% after deductible, it’s 70/30 or 80/20, and all plans have co-pays split like this for procedures and meds.
“Maybe, that the us taxpayers would be picking up the first 4500, too?”
Well, uhhh...yeah...
They will soon figure out they only need to ring up the deductible amount before insurance kicks in, not actually pay it. A 24 hour hospital stay will get them there.
their basic care for small accidents and such over there is fast, excellent and inexpensive.
something we don’t have here and won’t under commiecare-less.
Actually the main reason for overpricing is the SCOTUS ruling that said hospitals had to give services to illegals. From that time on illegals used the ER instead of using a doctor who could have turned them away. Hospitals required to treat indigents then passed those costs on to people who paid.
Jiminy Cricket! Ms. Galvez probably does not realize that the cost of her Bronze policy is really more like $910.00 a month if it’s a self-only policy because she has a $5,500 deductible before she receives ANY benefits. ($5,500/12 = $458.33!) If it’s for a family of four, the monthly cost before receiving ANY benefits is more like $2,290.00! Add another $460.00 for each of the other three people on the plan. That’s a lot of money for nothing but catastrophic coverage.
Since Ms. Galvez sought treatment in Alexandria, Virginia, she probably voted for Obama to rob her, and she probably thinks it is the Republicans who are robbing her!
“...Sorry, could be my eye-sight,,,,but on the picture is Barak Hussein shi.ting golf balls?,,,,”
Yeah. That be the boy! Racist POS too....he only craps out white balls!!!
I would think that substantial number of these LIVs don't have the reading comprehension skills to understand what a deductible is.
“...I think we are seeing the beginning of the end for a lot of Americans....”
I think you’re right. IF it were limited to the LIVs, it wouldn’t be that bad for the country at all, almost welcome actually. Unfortunately, it’s not gonna work that way.
Sad but true. Somehow it will be explained in the MSM that the deductibles under Obamacare are due to conservatives and the tea party.
No, I believe the article is misleading. The hospital did not turn her away. She chose to leave once she heard the price for x-ray.
Hey all you hope and change democrat rat voting dummies ..... PETCO sells antibiotics for flipper and fluffy on aisle 6.
