After 10 days stranded far from home, all 52 passengers from a ship stuck in Antarctic ice have now been transferred by helicopter to an Australian icebreaker.
"It's 100% we're off! A huge thanks to all," tweeted Chris Turney, an Australian professor among the group of scientists, journalists and tourists marooned on the ship.
A helicopter from a nearby Chinese icebreaker ferried passengers Thursday to the Australian icebreaker, the Aurora Australis.
The rescue is the latest chapter in a saga that began Christmas Eve after the Russian-flagged MV Akademik Shokalskiy got stuck in unusually thick ice.
Officials abandoned a succession of other rescue attempts in recent days because of the treacherous conditions in the region.
Australian authorities had said a plan involving the helicopter and a barge was put on hold because of shifting ice conditions.
But the new approach, which skipped the use of the barge, got under way later in the day. Turney posted videos showing the helicopter arriving on a makeshift helipad on the ice near the trapped ship and taking off into the crisp blue sky.

I would make these idiots pay for their rescue. Add the costs of the Russian, French, and Australian ice breakers, crews, and helicopters, divide by the number on the ship of fools, and send them bills they won’t soon forget.
No it won’t. My niece, a flaming liberal, when confronted with cooler global trends, immediately says, “you do know that has nothing to do with global warming, don’t you? In fact, it is another indication.” (I think she saw that Hollywood movie where everyone was freezing to death because of global warming)

As the soltice has passed, the days are once again getting shorter and less solar radiation is received with each passing day. While the present ice problem is caused by prevailing winds piling the ice up against the ship, as time passes winter ice will build. That has already started. If they can’t get the ship out in the next few weeks, it will probably stuck for the winter and may not survive
Speaking of the Darwin Award, while I was shoveling 8” of global warming from my driveway, I stopped to ask myself who would be the first candidate in 2014 for this prestigious award. Never did I think it would be a ship full of these idiots.

I have wondered too, about the ship captain and crew. Didn’t they know the ice conditions were so dangerous? Did they blindly sail into an ice field? Were they in open water, but then, ice built up with a change in the weather, which caught them flat footed???? Some details have not been reported about how they got trapped by ice.

They did it correctly but getting an up close and personal view.
The wind can shifts the ice floes rapidly. Last I checked the Chinese ice breaker was also stuck. The Australian ice breaker couldn’t get her loose because the ice was too thick.
The guy in the middle is throwing some kind of secret gang sign. That, or he’s showing his IQ.
Take a basin of water and throw some rose petals on top of the water. Put a fan at one end and watch all of the rose petals pile up on the other end. The same thing happens to polar ice during the summer when the ice is melting and cracking up. It moves during the winter too, but much less so and primarily due to ocean currents, not the wind.
According to Anthony Watts over at WWUT, they did not have a very good weather forecasting capability on board. Anthony and the Weather Channel have been asked to provide them with some wind forecasts so that they can predict when they might expect to get loose. The Captain certainly could have used that kind of info going in.
The world got a Godsend, 52 warmists frozen in reality, far away from where their dangerous lunacy could harm us. We should have left them there as examples to other extremists who wage war on mankind.

They first site their “models as predicting NO ICE left at the pole in a few years” (because of man made global warming) and then in a few years when there is a record amount of ice instead they say ... SEE! PROOF of man made global warming!

They are either lying through their teeth, or are in complete and utter denial.
It’s very tempting to laugh at these people, and they do rate a smirk or two; but I’m glad they were rescued safely.
