These tabs have limited usefulness. I have a couple of packs to provide about 3 days of protection for my family.
IMO of more use are methods to prevent exposure. Sheet plastic, the simple face masks, and long sleeve clothes. If you can keep from breathing in contaminated material and keep from getting it on you it will help reduce exposure.
The only other real thing you can do is get out of the contaminated area.

I have the sheet plastic and major staple gun with staples and very good masks and plenty of long sleeved clothes. If power is off I’ve got plenty of mails and hammers and a slede hammer.

Very good. The I-type radiation will decay out quite a bit within about 72 hours. The more long lasting stuff (e.g., cesium, IIRC) tends to be much less dangerous (the far less potent radioactive stuff, in essence). The other measures you mentioned are good, although a few feet of earth (for one material) as a barrier would be good, too. There are also other materials.
