SHUTESBURY — This weekend was the end of black powder deer hunting season, and an Amherst resident shot more than he was looking for Saturday when he put a .50-caliber bullet through his foot.
The 50-year-old man was hunting in the woods east of the Town Hall on Cooleyville Road with a group of other hunters when the accident occurred, said Shutesbury Police Chief Thomas E. Harding.
“(He) was unloading his black powder, .50-caliber rifle when it discharged into his left foot,” Harding said. The man ultimately lost his toe. The mechanics of the accident were unclear.

I hate getting to the party late, and reading all the comments, ya beat me by a mile.
Muzzleloaders are harder to use. You get extra challenge this way, and give the deer a chance. (There isn't much of a chance with .30-06 at 50 yards.)
You can also have an extra week or two of hunting if you use a muzzleloader. Bow hunters get even more time.
And it's open season year-round if you use your car.
There are very few ACCIDENTAL discharges. There are many more NEGLIGENT discharges. I have had both.
Three ND's and Four AD's from the same gun. A Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull. At first I blamed myself And called myself some colorful names. The second time, I thought I had done it again.The third time I deliberately had my finger off the trigger.
I took that sucker home and cleaned it very well. Then I loaded it with some light lads and fired it until it did it again. Called Ruger, and they found a broken sear. No charge and three weeks turnaround. Got it back on opening day!!
In the name of education, I will tell on my self. Once upon a time, I was deer hunting in southwest Texas. The county was Pecos, and we were near Crane, TX. I carried a borrowed rifle, at the age of 18, loaded and dangling from my right arm. I had my finger in the trigger guard. I was carrying a .270 rifle across a broad flat field. A round was chambered and the rifle was not on safe. From what seemed like- out of nowhere, came a deafening sound which in an instant was determined to have come from the rifle I was carrying. I came within inches or less of blowing a hole in my foot, or worse, blowing my entire foot off. I had relaxed my grip and allowed the rifle to slump down, and in turn my finger made contact with the trigger, setting off a round. STUPID. CARELESS. UNAWARE. The round penetrated the ground about one or two inches at best, to the side of my foot. I have appreciatively much better barrel discipline and trigger awareness now. Fate. Knocked. I was lucky it was the wrong address. Get Some!
An AD, as opposed to a BC?

One way to “unload” a muzzleloader is to shoot the gun. He probably pointed the gun at the ground to unload (shoot), and forgot his foot was in the way.

Muzzle loaders ARE real guns, just single shots. They have been around longer than modern day firearms and will do exactly what they are intended to do in the hands of someone who respects them. Shooting ones toe off is not on the “intended use” list however.
It’s simple. An AD is when something beyond the control of the shooter goes wrong, an ND is when something goes wrong with the shooter.

I learned that the hard way. I did my whole military career, not one ND (negligent discharge), and I own firearms, and never had a problem. Then I cleaned and function tested a revolver a few weeks back and had to buy a new monitor lol. It was embarassing heh.

Here in Ohio it is shotgun with slugs, muzzleloaders or bow. No rifles. And yes, the season is longer with muzzleloader or bow.
BTW were you shooting WINCHESTER 260 Gr loads. That is the hardest kicking round I have ever shot. I now load a 340Gr hardcast bullet. Loaded to the top, it doesn't have near the kick that Winchester does. Different powder, I guess. Much more fun to shoot. It still isn't a 22, but I didn't buy a 22.
