Benefit society?! Hopefully you mean this question sarcastically and didn't fall for that tired excuse they trot out every time special interest legislation is passed.
It's supposed to benefit the lighting companies that lobbied for years for the legislation to be passed. The profit margin is higher on other light sources. The "efficiency" of the light sources do not make up the additional energy used to manufacture them.
