The night before the 2008 Nevada Republican convention, the Ron Paul delegates all met at a Reno high school. Although Id called myself a libertarian for almost my entire adult life, it was my first exposure to the wider movement.

Puke is correct
There isn’t a Barf Alert in the world strong enough to prepare one for this mindless spew.
Once I saw the author’s ugly mug, I bolted.
The world is full of idiots and fools.
So heartless.
'The Republican convention didnt turn me off of libertarians, but I started losing respect for the movement while watching the financial meltdown. Libertarians were (rightly) furious when our government bailed out the banks, but they fought hardest against help for ordinary Americans. They hated unemployment insurance and reduced school lunches. I used to say similar things, but in such a catastrophic recession isnt the government supposed to help? Isnt that the lesson of the Great Depression?'
This caught my eye
After leaving my small town upbringing, I learned that libertarians are made for lots of reasons, like reading the bad fiction of Ayn Rand or perhaps the passable writing of Robert Heinlein. In my experience, most seemed to be poor, white and undereducated.
So is he saying white people are fools.

“He became a Democrat because, in his words, I began to think about real people, like my neighbors and people less lucky than me. Did I want those people to starve to death? I care about children, even poor ones.”
Goo... you need to be careful.... Lots of libs here... This is STILL a Conservative site, although JimRob has tolerated Libs for awhile...
and, a LIB is a LIB... no matter HOW you put it..
Wow, did he get all of that backwards. Government takeovers are not “help” at all.
Without reading the article I thought, “homosexual”.
Maybe the Duck Dynasty thing has had its effect.

How could anyone go from thinking that government should have as little to do with our daily lives as possible to embrace the notion that big government and liberal elites should control even the most mundane aspects of people’s lives because they are too stupid to make the right decisions?
“but extreme selfishness is just so isolating and cruel”
This should be the new leftist slogan.
Because dying among friends in the Khmer Rouge way is much more comforting!
Sounds like a typical condescending leftist snot to me. I wonder why he ever mistakenly thought he was a libertarian. I guess that the name just sounded really cool to him.
Any writer who cannot write an article without somewhere mentioing ‘the gay community’ is usually a Sodomite.
This clown’s got some real issues. 5 kids and a “gd liberal” wife and he embraces this:
I began to think about real people, like my neighbors and people less lucky than me. Did I want those people to starve to death? I care about children, even poor ones. I love the National Park system. The best parts of the America I love are our communities. My libertarian friends might call me a fucking commie (they have) or a pussy, but extreme selfishness is just so isolating and cruel. Libertarianism is unnatural, and the size of the federal government is almost irrelevant. The real question is: what does society need and how do we pay for it?
A month before the 2012 election, I changed my party affiliation to Democrat. I am a very late bloomer, that it took me so many decades to develop my own values. I was thirty-nine.
“the size of the federal govt is almost irrelevant”? Hey Chump, you ever heard of something called The Constitution? You see people voting with their feet, from your beloved Blue to Red? You see the craphole public school systems run by your comrades? How’s that Great Society done after 4+ decades?
39 yrs old and he goes back to school for “Creative Writing” Wow, what a man, what a provider
Oh btw, I’ve heard of plenty of my liberal pals make racist statements (after looking around the room first). And they sure wouldn’t give up their jobs or admissions in the name of “Diversity” I’m sure you wouldn’t either, nor let some poor oppressed SOB take one of your Lil Darlin’s spots at prep school or U.
You wouldn’t know “real values” if it hit you in the face. Take a leisurely trip to N Korea or Cuba and let us know how that works out for you.
The road to good intentions is paved with mass graves.
We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. And I have just one interest, and if I am wrong somebody else can have my job. I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises. I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started. And an enormous debt to boot.
