Although Mayor Annise Parker has vowed that she and her longtime partner, Kathy Hubbard, will not wed until gay marriage is legal in Texas, in recent interviews the mayor has softened her stance.
"The world is changing so fast, maybe I won't wait that long," Parker said last week in a year-end interview with CultureMap when asked when she would marry. "I'm no longer worried that (gay marriage in Texas) is not going to happen in my lifetime. After the Supreme Court ruling and the number of states that now have equal marriage, it's coming."
Since then CultureMap has learned that Parker and Hubbard are making wedding plans. Several sources close to the couple said they plan to marry in mid-January in a low-key ceremony in Palm Springs, Calif.
California is one of 18 states that currently recognize gay marriage. Couples who wed in a state that allows gay marriage are treated as a married couple for federal tax purposes, including income and gift and estate taxes, no matter where they reside, and also receive the same rights for immigration purposes. The policy on Social Security and other federal benefits has not been determined.
The couple would also be eligible for city of Houston health and life insurance benefits. In November, Parker announced that same-sex couples who have legally wed in a state that recognizes such marriages and work for the city of Houston can receive the same health care and life insurance benefits as straight couples. Harris County Republicans are challenging the ruling in court.
During the CultureMap interview Parker was asked what living person she most admires and named Hubbard. "Frankly, Kathy is the person I've lived with for the last 23 years. She is the most scrupulously honest person with the highest integrity that I have ever met," Parker said. "We each think we married up, and are constantly trying to impress each other after all these years. "
When asked to elaborate on the couple's wedding plans, the mayor's press secretary, Janice Evans, send this email: "The mayor very much appreciates the interest in the 23-year relationship she has shared with her life partner, First Lady Kathy Hubbard. However, marriage is a private matter and she has no announcements she wishes to make at this time. If that changes, we will let you know."
January is shaping up to be a busy month for Parker. She will inaugurated for her third and final term as mayor on Jan. 2.
She won’t have long to wait. The SC will impose gay marriage on all the states in 2014. Those who dissent will be castigated as vicious homophobes . . . and silenced.
egad.
“The world is changing so fast, maybe I won’t wait that long,”
Watch what you wish for
America is changing also.
More and more people are getting sick and tired of the homofacists trying to destroy our society. The backlash is not far from coming.........
Her hand is on the Bible. How sacrilegious an act and how exceeding stupid is the creature of the state in performing this obscenity.
In November, Parker announced that same-sex couples who have legally wed in a state that recognizes such marriages and work for the city of Houston can receive the same health care and life insurance benefits as straight couples.
Not straight couples. Normal actually married people.
If I have a concealed carry permit from another State can I carry concealed in your city? Dumbass........
How can Hillary Clinton be the mayor of Houston? And why is Bill gates holding a Bible for her?
The Houston Comical newspaper, a Hearst News rag, had a picture of the two bulls swapping spit yesterday. Nasty all around.
The world is changing so fast. She makes it sound as if it’s a good thing
This lying **** told voters she would not use her office to advance the gay agenda.
“However, marriage is a private matter....”
.
Nope.
That’s why a license is required issued by a proper authority.
Houston’s mayor should know better.
The Houston Comical “didn’t know” that Enron was crooked. Ken Lay helped them get the 1% vote margin for billions of dollars of stadiums.
What a worthless rag.
Even LBJ held a letter from them promising only positive press if he’d permit a bank merger to go through.
Her edict was in direct violation of Texas’ Constitution which does not recognize same sex marriages.
I assume she’s Democrat, no? And people believed her? Hahahahaha!
Not quite. But I expect a ruling whereby states will be required to fully recognize any legal marriage from another state.
Which is more or less compatible with the actual wording of the Constitution: “Full faith and credit shall be given in each state to the public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state. And the Congress may by general laws prescribe the manner in which such acts, records, and proceedings shall be proved, and the effect thereof.”
Yep, she’s a Democrat as virtually all Houston mayoral candidates are (except there was a Communist as well this time around).
Let’s all chip in and buy them a wedding gift.I think they registered at Doc Johnson.
Her replacement (she’s now term limited out, so she’s pushing hard and fast on her agenda) may be George Greanias, the Metro bus CEO who was caught cruising for rent boys online on city computers on city time. The fraud of his marriage and adopted kids has been revealed. But she never fired him.
That’s not hillary, but I understand how you might make that mistake. All diesel dykes start to look alike when they reach 50 or so.
