Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday announced the members of a grocery store task force that will work to find new owners for stores left vacant after Safeway closes all Dominick's stores in the Chicago-area Dec. 28.
The task force will work with building representatives, gather local market data, find and approach likely prospects in the food industry as well as host tours, create marketing materials and engage brokers.
It will also work to ensure the availability of fresh food and produce and support workers who are affected by the store closings.

I had same memories - PLUS they have “outlawed” Walmart so it can’t be that bit of low priced competition.
Get across the county line and really help to starve the beast.
There is always some sucker stupid enough to believe the lies.
Look at how New York suckers in businesses with promises, then literally rapes them with taxes and regulations because “business is evil”.
And businesses keep falling for it.
WIN WIN situation. Let Acorn come in and run the stores in lieu of getting grant payments. That should last about 6 months.
Whatever happened with capitalism and supply and demand? Since when do we need to waste tax dollars on this?
Obamao-style crony capitalism.
Safeway expects to get a cash tax benefit of $400 million to $450 million for exiting the Chicago market.

Hmmm...Are they being paid off to make way for Rahm’s buddies?
...literally rapes them with taxes....
((
Literally? Um, no, I don’t think so.
Huey, Doey and Fuey, Rahm’s task force leaders.
Second tier leaders: Larry, Curly and Moe
Third tier leaders: Manny, Moe and Jack
The CHICAGO WAY!
You see what ny does?
Just wait.
It will get worse.
It’s gonna be tough to offer them cheap rent on the one hand, and subject them to $15 living wage demands on the other. They’ll need security assurances, too. These areas were abandoned because they were urban near-war zones.
Driven out by the union’s.
They tried doing something like this in Indy. Needless to say, it was a bust. Cub Foods and Walmart Markets were given incentives to open stores in da hood. They didn’t last long because the food usually never made it into the stores. They stole it all off the delivery trucks. Painted grafitti all over the outsides and trashed the places. Some of those stores stand empty even now.
These stores were supposed to create an oasis in Moochies food deserts, but the water was drained from the start.
Apparently food stamps tain’t enough.
Safeway is not stupid.
Gotta laugh at that list of people. Maybe, maybe one or two have business experience. The rest are gvt teat suckers of one kind or another.
I wonder what he is doing to address the problems that ran these “vacant establishments” out of business in the first place. Hell of a climate when the people can’t afford stuff and the likely customers will make withdrawals via gun.
