Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday announced the members of a grocery store task force that will work to find new owners for stores left vacant after Safeway closes all Dominick's stores in the Chicago-area Dec. 28.

The task force will work with building representatives, gather local market data, find and approach likely prospects in the food industry as well as host tours, create marketing materials and engage brokers.

It will also work to ensure the availability of fresh food and produce and support workers who are affected by the store closings.

"Safeway, announced in November it was pulling out of the Chicago area market by the end of the year."

And this Gomer waits until four days before closing to appoint a task force!

That's top notch management planning ahead.

And this guy was Obama's Chief of Staff !!!

It's all starting to make sense in a bass-ackwards kind of a way.

Their answer will be to have government funded stores, Dallas tried this and it failed.

What an awesome opportunity. Call it Baraq's Hometown Market

Right across the street from Big Moochie's Fresh Arugula and Ugly Used Clothes Emporium.

And the Dominick’s stores are closing because . . . ?

Like you I would like to know the background history of this. These guys had the best stores in the central Chicago area. I used to spend a lot of time in Chicago and there was a Dominicks near where I stayed. Lots of high rise and condo living customers there and they did a big business. Amazing they closed all of these stores.

Chicago is a quagmire, we should have pulled out years ago.

The new store better make sure they pay their low-level veggie handlers at least $15 an hour,,,and most likely will be required to allow them unionize.

I used to live in Chicago. And the two dominant grocery chains were Jewel and Dominick’s. I wonder what’s going on? Competition from other stores, such as Wal-Mart? Losses on operating in the city, such as shoplifting and security costs?

And remember during the Chick Fill A uproar, Emmanuel said that Chick Fill A did not conform to “Chicago values”. So anyone going in there better support homosexual marriage, $15 per hour wages, green energy, ban plastic bags in the stores, and line up on the “correct” side of liberal issues, all for the priviledge of doing business in Chicago.

“Chicago is a quagmire, we should have pulled out years ago. “

Safeway should never have gone there in the first place! Why would a company that started out in Oakland, California ever think it would be good to “invest” in Chicago?

PLEASANTON, Calif. — PLEASANTON, Calif. (AP) — Safeway said Thursday its third-quarter net income fell 58 percent, hurt by a software impairment charge, higher theft and lower property gains.

Results beat expectations however and shares rose 6 percent in aftermarket trading.

The grocery chain, which operates 1,406 stores in the U.S., also says it’s exiting the Chicago market by early 2014 to focus on more profitable business. It operates 72 Dominick’s stores in Chicago that have been losing money. The move comes after Safeway said in June it would sell its Canadian stores.

-—Snip-—

The company said so-called “shrink,” the loss of inventory due to theft or employee error, hurt results by 6 cents per share. The shrink — mainly related to fresh produce — was due to a change in strategy that focused more on improving sales than controlling shrink, the company said. The strategy has been modified and shrink in the first four weeks of the fourth quarter has fallen back in line with expectations.

——Snip——

Safeway expects to get a cash tax benefit of $400 million to $450 million for exiting the Chicago market. That will partly offset its cash tax expense related to selling its Canada stores in June.

The commies would love to see all grocery stores close down so the government can control all food.
